Avast Home & P2P Proctection Issues?
« on: October 18, 2004, 10:21:54 PM »
For sometime now (near two months) I have been experiencing issues of NOT being able to install ancillary program(s) when using Avast Home.  This issue affects multiple, different machines using both XP Home and Pro with SP1 or SP2.  Noteworthy is that I always Stop On-Access Protection and Exit Avast before installing or removing programs.

Todays install problem was resolved by uninstalling Avast & rebooting.  I then installed the ancillary program and executed it without any problems.  I reinstalled Avast and the ancillary program would not execute/run.

I turned OFF the P2P option from within 'Add/Remove', 'Avast', 'Change' and the program functioned/executed normally.  Any thoughts or ideas?

Why do you call them ancillary programs?
Are they old ones, 16-bits applications?
Can you post their names (webpages, etc.)?

Did you change avast settings (specially Behavior blocker)?
Are you using an AMD processor 64-bits?

1.  Ancillary = Extra;  Installed 32 bit mainstream programs that are not part of the OS and used by agents nationwide.

2.  Would you accept file attach of such a program?  I can/will provide download links as I encounter problems.  There have been a varied range of programs that I cannot recall at the moment.  We are extremely busy caring for customer/client issues. :)  We really hate to uninstall Avast to resolve the problem.  I will provide assistance to resolve this.

3.  Avast settings are default.  Keep in mind that not all programs are affected.

4.  Both slow and fast AMD and Intel processors, varied manufacture desktops and notebooks.  NO 64-bit OS involved.

Typical scenario:  32-bit program will not execute to install (all Avast services turned OFF)
                          Remove Avast, reboot, program installs
Reinstall Avast, reboot, program will NOT execute

What I can state is that yesterdays problem was resolved by turning OFF/UNchecking the P2P option within Conrtrol Panel, Add/Remove, Avast, Change, rebooting and program executes normally with Avast running default settings with the exception of P2P disabled/Unchecked.

RejZor, sometimes this is not the panaceia... won't solve all problems. Did you remember last time? The user can't start working avast even after using it and leave us to AVG  :'(

In the meantime, we still don't have a clue as to which program(s) are involved. Like I said, you can't solve a problem if you don't know what the problem is. Generalities don't help. :'(

Bob, it's a problem on the VDD registry key like RejZoR said:

I can't help more as the user is using a 'clean' XP SP2 installation.
In the past, problems like this were related to Norton antivirus installed before avast.
The user must check what he has in this Registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\\VDD

kojak, we are trying to help you, but we can't do that if you stay so vagely about what applications and what really is the poblem. Please provide more details so we have something to go on.

Just to note... I've installed two computers with XP streamed with SP2.
avast! is not recognized by Security Central.
I tried to manually add the VDD Registry keys... Unsuccessful  :'(

I experience this with Security Center.  On occasion I have seen avast! recognized.

Technical,
For your information. I have WinXp Home, SP2. I downloaded SP2 from a Microsoft C.D. My security center immediately recognized Avast after I downloaded and restarted my pc. Not sure why yours didn't recognize Avast? :-[ I am using Avast 4.1 Free.

Did you install SP1 and other hotfixes before?
For me, XP directly to SP2 fails on recognizing avast  :(
I haven't discovered a solution yet.
