Skype and Avast
« on: June 04, 2011, 11:37:09 AM »
Hi

I understand Skype is a P2P application and, as such, my PC’s bandwidth would be used by other Skype users. Does it continue to use my bandwidth as long as it’s installed?
Skype isn’t listed in the P2P Shield, so does Avast need to be configured elsewhere for Skype?
And what other security precautions should I take?

Yes, you could call Skype a p2p application.
It let you connect directly to other people.
But others do NOT use your bandwidth.
Only you use your bandwidth.
Although you can send files to other people with it, it is not a file sharing application where your files are constantly shared with others like e.g. Limewire.

If you observe the IM shield traffic when you run and/or use skype, you will see that files related to skype are being scanned. So, I don't think that avast has to be configured for skype.
