As for me, I use my ISP's web based email since I do not like downloading email into a client on my computers. Earthlink's web based email provides a good spam filter.

In reference to gmail, that is where most of the spam comes from that I receive.
I "off & on" block email from gmail since none of my family, friends, nor other close associates use that service.

I probably use gmail more that many people since I have a lot of email contact with computer clubs in many states.
I'm happy to say that I hardly ever see any spam in my regular gmail inbox since the spam filter in gmail is excellent.
I also really don't receive a lot of items in the spam folder. One button deletes all of the spam in that folder.

I also think that Google is more secure than other e-mail providers. Also you don't have to keep making accounts for different sites. A Google account can get you into all of Googles features like YouTube and GSKPWH.

GMX just increased the storage to be equal with Gmail. They say they did it to make up for introducing ads which they never had before. However, I have yet to see any ads being inserted into mail and I haven't seen any from Gmail either which is supposed to have always had them.

As far as security goes, I'm inclined to believe that Gmail's is not better but probably worse partially because they are a huge target just like Windows. I do know this though, when I first made my Gmail account, I was almost immediately bombarded with massive amounts of spam mail, not only in Gmail, but also in the GMX account. I'm inclined to blame it on Google's notoriously lax privacy situation.  I was concerned about it happening again when I first started using Chrome as my main browser a couple of months ago, but so far, so good. I still don't like that you can't turn off the spam filter in Gmail.

and doesn't really require any adjusting.

It's almost the same as asking to turn off the avast protection so that you may do it on your own....

It's not even close to the same thing. I have already explained that I want all the mail from all providers to be delivered to Outlook Express and then dealt with by SpamFighter. I don't want to have to go to a website to see if I may have missed something that was classified as spam by them. I think I have managed to bypass Gmail's spam filter without turning it off by creating my own filters that search for the @ sign in the from and to fields of the mail and then choosing to never send those mails that contain the symbol (all of them of course) to the spam folder. Now it all comes through and Spamfighter does it's excellent job of sorting it out. On the rare occasions when it's wrong, I can easily correct it and either whitelist or blacklist a sender or domain for the future. If I was on W7, I'd be doing it the same way with Windows Live Mail.

You can find many complaints from Gmail users about how they have missed important mail because Gmail tagged it as spam.

Windows Live Hotmail & Gmail.

But Hotmail is my first option, with it I have skydrive with 25 GB of space for document(Office documents) photos, IE sync and more. the gmail account is for Google services only.
