Disabling Auto Update
« on: October 21, 2004, 09:25:49 PM »
If I disable the auto updates (which I would rather do manually every few days), should I be able to notice by one of the services not running anymore? I know where to disable it in settings, but Im just curious if the auto update feature has its own running service/process?

Disabeling AutoUpdates, could leave you vulnerable to infection. There have been times when we have had more than one update perday. There are also some days when there aren't any.
aswUpdSv.exe is the program that controls the updates from what I can see. ::)

Disabling the auto-update future is not advised. Instead of disabling it, you can also change the time between update checking in the avast4.ini file.

One of the major reasons that many people switched to avast, is for the auto updates. They are not that intrusive, use a tiny amount of resources and a virtual memory use of 460KB (on my system).

So you would be saving little, losing lots, not to mention increasing the potential for infection by the latest viruses, etc. It just isn't worth it.

I'm just curious if the auto update feature has its own running service/process?

The others already say that it's not good to disable it...
Anyway, you can see 'Settings' in my signature.

avast! iAVS4 Control Service (aswUpdSv.exe) is the service that allows automatic updates to avast antivirus.

Thanks everyone! Actually its not so much for memory as it is things like CD Recording. I have an older burner on one of my systems that doesnt have buffer underrun protection, and it did a def update today....I wouldnt have thought even without that it would be a big deal, but sure enough---coaster. So I just want to be able to update manually every day as I turn it on and turn it off. That will cover those days where multiple releases come out, because youre right---its an attractive reason to stick with Avast. That, and the fact that I can come to these forums and ask questions like these.   :-* lol

Thanks everyone!!
