[Bug] Context menu is very long
« on: June 11, 2011, 07:18:34 AM »
A picture speaks a thousand words:

Can the developers fix this within a month, or must I find a reg hack?

Not sure why this is a problem.

It looks like avast! is identifying the full name of the file that you right clicked on.

It seems to me that you would want to see the full name of the file.

If you think that the name of the file is too long then just rename it to something shorter. :)

Yes, please use the "hack", in particular put the line
ShellExtensionFileName=0
into the [UserInterface] section of avast5.ini.

No, I could always click the icon to see what the filename is - I never open the context menu to see what it is. A better method would be:

Code: [Select]
Scan 5-beau..e_jpg.jpg
Notice those dots?

If you think that the name of the file is too long then just rename it to something shorter. :)

Don't make me think. I always rename my files to be short and easily identifiable, but I don't think the average user [always] does. :)

Thanks, I'll try that.

Took me a while to figure this out: I had to run notepad.exe as an Administrator, then attempt to change the file... (Using any other program, elevated or not, didn't do anything.)

On the bright side, it works!

You shouldn't have had to run notepad as administrator, it is only notepad which has write permissions because of the avast self-defence module (other text editors only have read permission) and when you save it the self-defence module asks for confirmation.

So I don't know why you had to run notepad as administrator.

UAC...blocks the writing as well... (I've run into this myself)

Don't you just love UAC, blocking writing to a sodding text file, albeit an .ini file. I can understand avast protecting its application settings but UAC really is a pain in the rear.

Shame it is not so great at stopping malware doing the same :P

It's not UAC. It's avast asking for elevated rights through the folder access rights.

I'm spoilt with XP Pro, able to get on with my business without hassle ;D

I don't feel that UAC brings that much in the way of protection, given what we see in the viruses and worms forum for Vista and win7 systems.
