i honestly don't see the problem with Gmail.   All e-mail is scanned anyway.  If you have something private you don't want scanned, hand write it and hand deliver it ;0)

as for google's desktop search, microsoft have one due out soon

Can't ever remember searching for anything on my computer, I have everything nicely in their folders, so, doubt i would ever use such a feature

This isn't about Gmail, it's about the Google Desk Top Search.

Bob, since people in this thread also mentioned gmail, I decided to reply to both gmail and google desktop which are both being discussed in this thread.

I have a tendency to save a lot of info on a separate hard drive and many times I can't remember just where some subject or file is.  I use these tools to solve this problem.  I can't get along without these!

Search Utilities

Ava Find (Shareware) First 30 days has all the Pro features enabled, after that you can still use many of it's features.  I found it well worth the cost!
Find any file instantly on your PC

XFind (Freeware)
Search .txt and HTML files

InfoRapid Search & Replace (Freeware)

Full text search in Html, Rtf, Pdf, WinWord and Excel files and many other file formats
- Replaces words over many text files in one step
- Saves search results and search parameters in a database

ISYS Hindsite (Freeware)
Index and search previously visited web pages - without bookmarking them!

You saw something on the web, but you can't remember where, and you didn't make a bookmark. ISYS:hindsite offers Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer users the unique ability to perform full text searches on the contents of previously accessed web pages.

I'm was thinking about trying out the Google Desktop to see how good it is.
