so AVG this started AVG 2012 beta today
But its not '12 yet, is AVG's calender wrong?  :P

In all seriousness, you just got an answer from an Avast! employee that said "unlikely" a couple weeks ago.  AVG's or any other competitors releases have nothing to do with Avast!'s release sched., what did you think has changed in the meantime since your last answer?  ::)

this "rapid release/update" thing is getting to be bit of a fad, no?  Everyone wants a new release yesterday....

Well because we don't like the UI of avast 6.
Bitdefender, Kaspersky, ESET,AVG,Norton and many more has their calender wrong and they are either testing 2012 version or already released 2012 versions in the market.

I wanted avast to change its UI and can keep the current version. Or atleast give us an option to do that.

Uhh, who is "we"?  He said nothing of the UI.  Do you know this person, are you organizing some kind of "Avast! UI Resistance Movment"?  ;D
Or just a typo?  Thats ok, I guess...hope it is one of those and not you padding your opinion with multiple accounts.

When it looked like media player, ppl didn't like it. Now it looks like proper program and ppl again don't like it. It's hard to satisfy 100+ million users in every way so you just have to pick some middle way. And quite honestly i don't see anything wrong with the GUI. It's nice to look at, well organized, logial to use and just works.

God do I hate that buzz word, it really is totally meaningless, its just a sodding on-line server for heavens sake.

The problem being there is such a loose definition of what cloud actually is and in relation to security applications, I don't believe it pays to be too reliant on solely on-line features.

It isn't a panacea a solution to all system ills, avast already has elements which could loosely be called 'cloud' based.

It has been announced for a few times that we'd like to stick with a yearly release cycle moving forward. And since v6 was released on Feb 23, 2011, you can probably do the math and estimate when we plan to release v7.

That's all I can say atm, given it's June 2011.

Thanks

Hello,

the thread linked above by SecurityAdvisor mentions just a list of more of less confirmed items collected in various discussions and announcements. It is surely not a guarantee that a certain feature gets included in the next avast! 7 release for 100%, that is also what we strongly mentioned in the thread.

Furthermore it is a thread where we collect and discuss suggestions from our users.

Lets take "Cloud Technology" as an example. Like DavidR already mentioned...it is a buzzword at the moment, without any proper or common definition. If you take the wide-ranged sense of "cloud" avast! is already incorporating cloud technology when it comes to CommunityIQ and VirusTotal submissions, even WebRep is a cloud feature. What we talking about now is "cloud-based lookups", but this was already mentioned in last years roadmap (or by VLK in a reply in some thread). It was dropped in favour of some new concepts like SafeZone and AutoSandbox (which I much more prefer and think is a much better concept). So you can see that nothing is for sure, only the guys at AVAST know exactly what will be in the next version. And that's totally perfect, otherwise there would be no room for rumours ;)
