email not secure ?

just installed free avast security/virus protection: i got a message to change something relating to email, iml , map or something like that, because it can't virus check the email , the way it is set-up; thanks   i use outlook express, xp;

Are you using secure email (gmail or equivalent).  If your settings in OE select SSL and port 995 or 993, Avast! is unable to scan your email because it is encrypted outside of Avast!  The message you see usually asks you to untick the "use SSL" and go back to ports 110/143 and 25 (sometimes 587) in your client OE.  This will allow Avast! to do the virus scanning, and Avast! will also handle the encryption/decryption protocols with your mail server to protect your mail.  There is a discussion of Thunderbird setup for an example at http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=76915.msg636942#msg636942 .  Sorry, I don't use Outlook Express.
