Windows 7 SP 1 installation failed
« on: June 26, 2011, 08:53:53 AM »
I have tried numerous times and on many different occasions to install Windows 7 SP1 through Windows Update, and get the following message.
Windows update Failed Code 80004005.
I have tried the 3 suggestions from Microsoft with no positive results.
Pictures of this information are attached to this message.
I have plenty of free space on my hard drive.
Should I try downloading the whole SP 1 file and installing it.
I did upgrade my Vista machine to windows 7.  All my other updates have installed with no problems, before and since my attempt to install SP 1.
I also have a Windows 7(factory installed) 64 bit laptop on which SP 1 installed with no problems.
Any help would be appreciated.
I was just checking on the Windows 7 forum and they think it might have something to do with having Windows Mail working in Windows 7.  Is any one in the forum using Windows Mail rather than Windows Live Mail and had this installation problem?

roro,
See if this helps:
That error code indicates a hash check error... so the solution was to go and delete the files
that had been downloaded through the update process to force windows update to redo the download....
so you have to go into windows\softwaredistribution\downloads and then find the directory with the SP1 files in it -
it will be the one with files that refer to KB936330 in it - and delete that directory.
Good Luck

Did you try downloading the stand alone SP1 file rather than going to Windows Update? Sadly Windows upgrades frequently have problems that's why a clean install is always best.

Joe,
I did try through Windows Update.  The first time it failed was 5.29.11, and it has failed many times since including 3 days ago. I haven't downloaded the entire SP 1 installation file yet as it is so large, but I will try to do that today.
Bob,
I went to the indicated directory and couldn't find any reference to the  KB936330 file.  BTW, the failed file is:

"Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (KB976932)

Installation date: ‎6/‎22/‎2011 4:46 AM

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 80004005"

What program do I use to open the files in the download directory?  There are only 3 other folders there and they were all dated before the first failed download.

One more question.  I am trying to download the files for SP 1 and my 32 bit windows 7 machine.
Do I need to download the file:

"7601.17514.101119-1850_Update_Sp_Wave1-GRMSP1.1_DVD.iso"

if I am not putting the installation files on a DVD.
I am downloading the other three ...X86 files
