« on: October 28, 2004, 10:15:47 PM »
i just start using AvastPro recently and playing with the options.

I tried to use the Screensaver task but it crashed. Now the task exist but i cannot get into the properties anymore.

I read that there is several issues with it but is there a way to restore it correctly ?

Wellcome to avast and forums!  ;)

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove
Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

Shutting down the task in taskmanager should do the trick.

Upgrading to Avast 4.5 beta may solve this problem. There are many fixes in the new version, including some which deals with the screensaver.

??? I have no task and the screen saver module works because it's the screen saver not a schedule task... Am I forgetting something here?  ???

wow, that was quick reply ! thanks guys.

The repair function did not work. I reboot to see if the problem went away but no.

It is not a big deal since all the other tasks seems ok.
I am not to much the "beta" type so i'll wait if there is a quick cure.

Yes you are forgetting something. When the screensaver becomes active (or if you select it and choose "example" in the display properties) the screensaver will start running as a process. And it keeps running even if you set the screensaver properties to use none. This was a bug in 4.1 and still isn't solved in 4.5 (at least here it is not working properly)

Technical, i was refering to the SS task appearing after you select the Enhance User interface/Settings/Enhanced Interface/Show special tasks.

The SS task properties can be changed here but not anymore.
The Job properties display is blank now.

The Avast SS properties in Window ScreenSaver control panel do not appear too.

Eddy, i reboot the computer so that should kill any related task.

That settings are from your own screen saver. If it's too simple, without configuration, that will be blank, hide, forbiten.

The Avast SS properties in Window ScreenSaver control panel do not appear too.

For me it always appears and display the settings for my own screen saver.

I know there is problems with this module (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=11;action=display;threadid=8087) but these ones you're talking about I can't find  ::)

My friend, i think i am not explaining well. When you are in the tasks window, normally you can select EDIT or PROPERTIES for the screensaver task. Then a new window [1] appears where you can select which screensaver to use, sensitivity, exclusions, virus etc.. like any other task. My problem is that since it crashes once, this property window will never open for that specific task, even after reboot.

For me it always appears and display the settings for my own screen saver.

I know there is problems with this module (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=11;action=display;threadid=8087) but these ones you're talking about I can't find  ::)

Also, if you choose the Avast screensaver in the STANDARD Window Display Properties and you press "settings", the same properties window as [1] will appear.
So for me, this one too does not show up anymore.

I think because of the crash, a file has been damaged.
 :P

Armagedon, I understood your problem since from the beginning. I thought it has a simple solution but now, after your explanation, I'm afraid not...

I think it's better uninstall / boot / install / boot... you will renew the avast! folder directory and the possible damaged files, I hope  ::)

ya, i though of reinstalling but after all, i wont be using that feature anyway. Beside the crash can happen again.

I was looking for a quick fix. If i knew which file(s) to replaced, i could have copy them from my other "working" computer.

P.S. i think the crash happens because contrary to my other computer (Win98), you could select, in the properties window, an empty field in the SS selection droplist. (XP Home)

cheers.
