Avast not in tool bar ,

Avast does not load at start up. I have not added any new software, or changed any settings. I also can't find in the program were to tell avast to load at start up. also icon is missing, not in unused icon file.

 first go to programs then in programs find avast!antvirus. next righi click on file thid should open options. next select send to desktop. this will put icon on your desktop. next start avast. memory test should start after memory test click on arrow key in the upper left hand corner to open up menu. in menu open up common. in common make sure the test memory upon start up is checked. this should take care of both your problems' hope this helps you

Check taskmanager and see if it really is not loaded or that it is just the icon not showing.
Also make sure you have not set the icon to auto-hide in the taaskbar properties.

Do you use XP or Windows 9x/Me?
Did you try to repair the installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove
Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
