Avast Oulook Express & K9
« on: October 24, 2004, 03:11:17 PM »
Win XP/HE - SP2
Avast 4.5
K9

Just installed Avast 4.5 and I'm confused! Should I have 'Mail Protection Wizard' in Start - Programs - Avast Antivirus menu 'cos it's not there!
Also incoming emails are tagged TWICE with 'Inbound Message Clean'
I'm not convinced that the automatic mail set up has taken account of K9.
According to Outlook Express my server settings on first bootup after installing v4.5 were:
Incoming: 127.0.0.1:9999
Outgoing: 127.0.0.1:9999#smtp.tiscali.co.uk
these didn't work - I couldn't connect to the mail server.
I have edited these to read
In: 127.0.0.1
Out: smtp.tiscali.co.uk
and this DOES appear to work tho' I get the double tagging and I'm not sure K9 is in the loop.
Am I doing something wrong?

I don't know how K9 works, you'll just have to wait for someone who uses it.

I know though, that you shouldn't see Mail Protection Wizard any more in your Start/avast! menu. Everything is done automatically now.

Your incoming and outgoing servers should have real names now... not 127.0.0.1 any more.

Example:
Pop3 server name: pop.tiscali.co.uk (I'm not sure is this correct for your ISP, you should know that I guess)
SMTP: smtp.tiscali.co.uk

Cheers !

S.Z.C. fyi: I have 4.5 and the mail protection wizzard is still in the menu and working. And (as far as we know now) you still need to use the 127.0.0.1 trick for pop mail if you use Opera's mail client.

Yes - I read the help file for v4.5 and it clearly says that the wizard should be in the Start, etc menu - hence the reason for my confusion.

Mail Protection Wizard is only required in Windows 9x. So if you use Win9x...

Checked the thread - the updated mail wizard the Vojtech refers and which I believe solved my problem last time to won't run with the updated v4.5.

I tried setting the incoming server to pop.tiscali.co.uk and it wouldn't connect - had to revert to 127.0.0.1

Could we have a definitive answer on the presence (or not) of the wizard in the Start menu from Alwil perhaps?

Many thanks.

OK, but why don't I see Mail Protection Wizard any more ? And in my Outlook Express (I don't use any other mail client) everything is set without 127.0.0.1 tweaking... all incoming and outgoing messages are checked properly and signed by avast!

Cheers !

I went to the Avast program folder and ran the ashPopwz (the standard one not the updated one) from there.

The program terminated part way through as it said everything was done automatically now!

Things seem to be working with the 127.0.0.1 tweak but I'm still confused by the double-tagging of incoming mail.

Might be onto something here but need to investigate further.
If I open 'On access Protection Control' I see that under the 'Internet Mail' provider settings Avast is checking both POP3 and IMAP mail and tagging them as clean (or not).
Could this be why all my messages are double-tagged?
Do I need both POP3 and IMAP checking - what's IMAP exactly?
Thanks.

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is a standard protocol for accessing e-mail from your local server. IMAP (the latest version is IMAP Version 4) is a client/server protocol in which e-mail is received and held for you by your Internet server. You (or your e-mail client) can view just the heading and the sender of the letter and then decide whether to download the mail. You can also create and manipulate multiple folders or mailboxes on the server, delete messages, or search for certain parts or an entire note. IMAP requires continual access to the server during the time that you are working with your mail.

A less sophisticated protocol is Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3). With POP3, your mail is saved for you in a single mailbox on the server. When you read your mail, all of it is immediately downloaded to your computer and, except when previously arranged, no longer maintained on the server.

IMAP can be thought of as a remote file server. POP3 can be thought of as a "store-and-forward" service.

POP3 and IMAP deal with the receiving of e-mail from your local server and are not to be confused with Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), a protocol used for exchanging e-mail between points on the Internet. Typically, SMTP is used for sending only and POP3 or IMAP are used to read e-mail.

jhiker, I had the same problem when updating to 4.5.
Although, I use Spamihilator and not K9.
You should 'turn back' the configurations into the default ones, probably described on the K9 help file.

For Spamihilator:
Incoming mail pop3 server: localhost (or 127.0.0.1)
Account name: yourPOP3Server&yourUsername&120

See more details here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=9;action=display;threadid=3413;start=60#bot

For K9, there is an explanation in the FAQ link on my signature  ;)

Cheers guys.
Tech - which problem you referring to when you had similar - the double-tagging?

What does the '120' mean at the end of the account name you show?

My account name is of the format:
pop.tiscali.co.uk/110/myaccountname.screaming.net and I don't understand why you have 'ampersands' in there - is this a peculiarity of spamihilator?

Do you reckon this is OK. Please tell me I don't have to edit the .ini file!

Thankyou for your patience....
