Please, upload (attach) the avast log:
C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log\Setup.log
or C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log

If the file is too big for the forum, post the last 400-500 lines of it.

Are you talking about "Update Program" or "Update Engine and Virus Definitions"

There have been a couple of program updates recently including today.  They require reboots.

Updating the program means a change in the number.

For some reason, you are/were using a beta version, and it is configured to update to each new release including betas. This will continue to happen even if the current version number coincides with the current stable version number.

May I suggest completely unistalling the currently installed Avast, then REBOOT, and then install the current new Stable version?

By doing this change, you will only receive program updates for stable versions, and the regular database updates.

The database updates are performed twice a day, and they do not require to reboot.

The stable program updates are performed once in awhile (according to development), so it shouldn't be a problem.

So, as I said, please unistall your current Avast, reboot, and install the new Stable version.
