Lets rebuild the boot record using the repair option

If the recovery console is already installed i.e you have the full set of options under your safe mode menu then go direct to the red items  in the first set of instructions

  • Put the Windows Vista or Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
  • Press a key when you are prompted.
  • Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
  • Click Repair your computer.
  • Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
  • Type Bootrec.exe, and then press ENTER.
.

Then type the following commands pressing enter after each line

    • bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
    • c:
    • cd boot
    • attrib bcd -s -h -r
    • ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
    • bootrec /RebuildBcd
    .
    Then restart the computer normally

OK it looks like you need to replace the bootloader

There are some instructions here on how to do it, option one we have done so could you move on to option two and let me know if that works http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBCD/Recovering+the+Vista+Bootloader+from+the+DVD

I must admit I have only a vague idea as to why this happened but I will need to discuss my thoughts first

ok, tried that and rebooted but got the Windows Boot Manager Screen saying that windows failed to start and asking me to insert my installation disc the error messages are as follows

    File: \Boot\Bcd

    Status: 0x0000098

Info: The windows boot configuration data file does not contain a valid OS entry

Ithink it repaired my boot sector but didnt put it with the same partition that my OS is on , if that makes sense?

For what its worth i think my OS files may have been moved to partition D: and the fix you pointed me to reates a new boot sector on C: so maybe run the fix again but substitute C: for D: ??
