avast 6.0.1203 extremely slow boot times
« on: July 16, 2011, 02:42:47 PM »
Hi all,

updated avast to the latest version on both of my till then perfectly functioning laptops and now I have two machines which need 10 minutes to boot. I suspect it has something to do with an automatic update (avast.setup). Both laptops run XP SP3. Any idea?

Thanks

The auto update function essentially hasn't changed, it still checks for updates once a connection is detected. So that check and when it occurs hasn't changed.

What version of avast did you have installed before updating to 6.01203 ?
How was the update done, from the avastUI, downloaded and install over the top of the last version or download and a clean install ?

I had always the latest version so it must have been the version prior to this one. I tried to unistall, used avast unistall toll in safe mode as well and then installed from scrach but that made no difference. Also, besides the slow boot time, both computers very often pause for many seconds for no apparent reason.

What other security software do you have installed on these system ?

Whilst it shouldn't be an issue, as the differences in resource use between the 6.0 versions should be negligible, what are the specs of these systems (CPU, RAM, etc) ?

I have been using avast on an XP Pro SP3 system for many years and have never experienced this type of problem and essentially avast6 uses less resources than avast5 and avast4.8.

So I'm at a bit of a loss as to what else to suggest.

Yes, I have Norton Ghost 12 installed on both computers so I will try to remove it from one and see if that fixes it. As for other security softwares, I'm running ZoneAlarm. But whatever causes this issue, it is definitely triggered by the latest revision of avast 6 as the previous one was working very well.

It seems current avast! build has many incompatibility issues with various programs. First it was PerfectDisk, now it's Norton Ghost. Not cool.
