a difference i noticed between Avast WebRep and firefox's Web of Trust:

im not trying to knock avast, i love avast, im just letting people know i would recommend WoT cause it shows the the ratings in more areas and in the ad areas it shows potentially harmful sites.

not a problem.  maybe avast will make an improvement on it. i got the idea to mention something here off of this guy that does AV reviews that said something like...
 
"AV program companies should  share definitions and exploits instead of companies competing for money... like when an AV software has a not-so-great virus detection but adds an extra feature to make up for the weaker detection... so all AV programs meet a minimum quality standard.  like the critical systems of a vehicle, the brake systems by law for every manufacturer has to meet a minimum quality standard."

i don't mean to get it the post off topic but i thought it sounded like a good idea and the add-ons i thought was a good example.  i would like to use avast's webrep add-on but im sad that it doesnt work like WoT

Notice that WebRep has this as a safe site (which is correct)
WOT has it tagged as unsafe because the rating is strictly user based.

One of the big differences between WOT and WebRep is the avast virus lab's part in the rating.

I believe I did that with OptimizeGoogle add-on a long time ago when a lot of what was in the sponsored column were bad sites paying for search word placement and had little to do with what you were actually searching for.

i think its funny im on the avast forum and picking on poor avg, its not on purpose, its just an example.  but i tried something else.
using WoT again, i typed in avg.com in the search box by the address bar, the sponsored area it shows "www.avg.com" with a poor rating, but below it shows "www.avg.com/" with a good rating.  so i right clicked on the bottom link and copied and pasted the link location in the search box and it pasted just the .com url. then i did the same to the one in the sponsored area and it pasted a long and weird sting.  so i think the one on top, even though it plainly shows the .com url, it redirects you to a fake site.
i also tried using the preview, magnifying glass thing and the sample shows two different home pages.  i didn't want to try it cause i didn't want to take the chance even though i'm well protected.

cause WOT's bad rating is not about avg.com but about totally unrelated advertising site.

or do you claim advertising sites are safe?

it seems most opinions are saying to avoid them completely, i was not aware until now that they could be a problem and i bet in the past im sure not being aware of it caused some malware attacks before when i thought i was going to a legitimate site. i could imagine a lot of people don't know they could be a problem too.
maybe AV programs or browsers could disable them from out of the box installation. or have it where during the setup process it would be up to the user to turn them on. how would i turn them off anyways?

I agree with you all on this, yet again, at the end of the day it's the WOT USERSthat rate the site, not professionals. So even a random person could rate a suspiciously sounding yet totally safe site a RED.

I have both add-ons, so it's not a problem ^^

1. If you look at the screenshot, you'll notice Green according to WebRep and Red according to WOT.
   Do you think that most people bother to read all the reviews when they do a simple search
   The answer is no which is why the initial message (color of the app) should convey the true danger signal.

2. There are probably more hidden dangers in advertising sites that in most other sites. ( Not anything I remarked on in my original post. )
