It's very unlikely to be the reason... but could the problem be actually with the skins? I mean, what skin were you using before? Didn't you delete some?

Mina, I'm sure you tried to repair your installation through Control Panel so... I'll try to make another guesses:

1) Did you use C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX and boot after that?

2) What version of MDAC drivers did you have installed?
     Do you have MS Office? Which version?

the default  (I do not know which one as the gui did not start at all).
I did not delete any  ::)

It's a part of ActiveSkin 4.2.7.3 the application used by avast to 'wear' the skins  ;)
