After the endless naging about updating the application, there is another endless naging about restart.

This popup responds to space key press. I was editing an article and had been doing so for maybe 30 min when that popup came while typing. It ofcourse picked up my key presses and instantly started rebooting my computer, and I lost a lot of important work.

This is a big inconvinience, and frankly quite retarded to just trow up a popup like that even though devs of avast! antivirus is far from alone, and shuld be fixed in the next version.

I have removed avast from my computer and I will not recomend it to anyone. Maybe I'll give it another chance later but right now it's not an option anymore, I cant have apps suddenly restart my computer. Even though it happens only after updating without restarting, it's just not worth it. I went for years activly downloading torrents and p2p-networking without having an anti virus program and without getting any viruses (I would've noticed even small ones unless they are rootkits etc) and I can do it again. There is really no need for an anti-virus unless you download the first exe-file you find.

A screenshot certainly would have helped but, since that's already to late,
All we can do is wish you well. Judging from the content in your post, you certainly
have lead a charmed life since you claim that you've never run into an infection despite
not using an AV.
Unfortunately, what you describes could very well be the result of an infection, or numerous other things.
If you ever decide to install an AV program, check here first and give us some information about your system
and what other security related programs are or have been installed.
Good Luck!

I don't understand your reply at all.

How would a screenshot help you? My words describe what happend prefectly well. The popup where avast wants you to reboot after an upgrade takes focus when it pops up. If you at that point write on your keyboard, avast AV will reboot your system because the "Yes" button is marked by default and by hitting "space" you accidentally press it. In that situation it's inpossible to create a screenshot, since your computer is rebooting.

No, not getting infected wasn't luck. You just read the comments of what you download, and you'll be fine. You know that one can go without your product/any antivirus program perfectly fine, but you couldn't say that as a representative in their forums, could you. You decide what to download and that's the best protection against viruses.

On your last comment, why would I take my time to go here and post my system info? If I want an archive scanner (which is what I used avast for) I'll just install it.

You could have simply selected to not reboot.
I don't intend to argue with you but you're totally wrong and have been extremely lucky.
No protection lead to an infection.

avast! simply asked you if you wish to restart and i am sorry but it is your own fault for selecting yes. No one elses. If you want to place blame at someone you should blame yourself for not paying attention.

So does every other program after doing an update that requires a reboot in order for the new changes to take effect.  :)

Especially a security application that may not even work properly without doing the requested (required) restart.

I just posted two messages of what happend clearly explaining and you still don't understand? I did not have the choise to restart, because the popup question came up while I was writing and I had no chance to avoid pressing keyboard space key (which you use when you are writing words...) and with that accedently pressing "yes". It wasn't a choise. Why would I chose to restart in the middle of writing unsaved work?

You make it sound like there is a big scary world full of nasty viruses that are just waiting for you to uninstall your anti-virus application to infect you. I understand that you have to say such things because you are loyal to avast! and their products, but really, you just come out as unexperienced and eagerd to push a product. Think about it, how often does your AV program actually sound? Only when you have downloaded something, didn't read the comments (or there where none) and it was from a less trustworthy site, right? Read the comments, find a (few) serious torrent sites/downloading sites and dont click things you don't know and you will be perfectly fine. I did it for years and still my av has never sounded exept ocational false alarms (those general/keylogger) on files that never infected me. And don't try to steal the last word in this by saying you are not gonna argue it and then argue it.

The best protection is having a common sense. You don't actually need an anti-virus software.
Still, it can be very nice to have if you want to scan something you are not sure about.

Ah okay so what you are saying is that for every word I write, I should check so that there is no popup and if I asume that there is not going to be one (which is the case like 99% of the time) I am to blame myself? That's preposterous.

Please think you post through next time before you hit the "post" button.

I don't have to say anything. I use avast! because that's what I choose to use and continue to use it
as long as it does it's job of protecting my system.

Since you already know the answer, I'll let you continue to feel comfortable in your false sense of security.
Peace.

No one can "steal" the last word, unless you think you have right to it yourself. ;)

Sure.  I don't need anything in the face of repartition/reformat.  I also don't need a tuberculosis vaccine, but I get one because I think not only of my own health, but that of other around me whom I come into contact with, and the world as a whole.  Seriously, coming on an AV forum and saying something like that?  Its like an atheist showing up to Sunday mass, sitting in one of the pews and trying to de-convert people.  You get points for balls, thats all, and it makes people who might otherwise be inclined to help you simply dismiss you as part of the problem rather than part of the solution.

Anyway, didn't you uninstall Avast!?  Did you need something else here?  Your "no-AV-needed" opinion, as I said, just doesn't hold water here, and the point of your topic seems long lost. Also, you can't win a debate with Bob, because he is secretly Avast-Man, and has little Avast! amoebas in his blood. ;)

A google search gave no close hits - so I think that goes down as a piece of genuine homespun avast forum philosophy!

There you go again, trying to have the last word. Fine, if you want to call sevral years of experience "false" then I guess it's your personal view. No more to to word about.

Peace.
