Avast keeps telling me over and over that the above-noted process has been identified as a threat and blocked - somehow or other it appears to be linked to Windows Explorer which shows up in my Task Manager but is not being used.

welcome to the forum. I suggest you try a boot scan with avast and a scan with malwarebytes antimalware and see if they come up with anything, as a first step/s.

download install update and do a scan with malwarebytes. don't forget to remove what it finds. and a system reboot might be needed.
