How to properly install new skin files ?
« on: November 03, 2004, 09:56:26 AM »
I just downloaded the "MacLover OS X" skin for avast. When i unpack the zip file i get a txt-file and and .aswcs file. i copied both to the data/skin directory, but i cannot choose the skin form the list of skins inside avast. it seems, that avast does not recognize the new skin. is there anything else i have to do to install a new skin properly ?

thanks in advance,
bat

Unpack the downloaded zip to a folder of your choice. Than double click the aswcs file. That's all.

This was already explained in other threads on this board. But I've just checked, and strangly enough, on the download page for the skins they do not tell how to install them. :-\

I think Alwil should add the installation procedure to that webpage. ;)

edit: In Avast's help it is not mentioned how to install either.

That's because it's not the case with other any other skin on that page. That was RejZor specific request to put his skin in zipped file like that, just because he has CREDITS txt file inside the package. Other skins will automatically install itself as soon as you click the link on download page...

Cheers !

EDIT: again, asws files are skin files. If you have them saved somewhere on the disk, other than avast! skins directory, you should just place them into default skins directory, which usually is:

Program Files / Alwil Software / Avast4 / Data / Skin

Second common type of skin extension is aswcs. That is compressed skin file, and best of all it's autoextractible. As soon as you click on that file, it will autoinstall itself in default avast! skins directory (above mentioned). If file fo any reason doesn't install itself automaticaly, but instead, it's saved somewhere on your HD, just double-click it like Eddy said and it will install itself. The problem with RejZor's skin is that it's inside the zip package. That's because he wanted to distribute that skin with little CREDITS txt file... Link for his skin on the download page is link for zip file. So it's normal that it will be saved somewhere on your HD. Then you have to extract it and finally double-click the aswcs file inside the package. That's it...

Cheers !

Mentioning this on that website would help people. It is not the first time someone has a problem installing a skin. And not everyone will make it to this board for help.

Just another though I have ;D

Eddy, read my reply again, I just edited it...

Anyway, I think they already put in there that it's a zipped file. Although, some explanation regarding how to install it would be great. You Eddy are completely right about this... how about alarming someone from Alwil ?  ;)

Also, all those skins that I fixed "cursor changing issue" - read about it here:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=8287 ,

...should be uploaded in there very soon, and it would be great if Alwil wants to listen to us this time, and put somewhere in explanation that those skins are version 2.

Actually you can launch .aswcs skin file directly from within ZIP archive.
At least on Windows XP with native ZIP support.
