Firewall Test Site
« on: August 23, 2011, 05:17:51 AM »
Hi,

I try to test my pc firewall with online firewall test. - NMAP.

http://hackertarget.com/nmap-scan/

But it keeps showing me port 23 is open on my computer. Even though I have Avast Internet Security Trial on Windows XP.

Why?

Thank

Xiuc

Are you using a router?  Port 23 is telnet and is often left open for remote configuration of the router.  Avast! can only deal with ports that are actually controlled by your computer.

Thank u

You are correct. The port scanner @ http://hackertarget.com was hitting my router that is a "NAT" device. I did some reading.  8)

Unless I port forward then no external packets go through to the internal pc.

I don’t see why that site needs your email address & Ip

This is a great site for testing.  http://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2

Telnet ----Time Warner etc use this port to update firmware & files.
The port is closed & secure.
You can not stealth it.
The companies are fully aware of these pipelines & wouldn’t think they would allow a hacker to use this port.

I don’t know whether these companies let you use your own router or not.
Just forget it & happy surfing.

My ISP is Time Warner RoadRunner.  I use my own router (it's allowed), and using GRC's Shields Up shows port 23 as stealthed.  All ports test as stealth.  Stealthed or closed would both be considered safe, I would think.
