Well, I'd ask again - are you sure the update happened after you logged on?
The virus definitions may be updated even if nobody is logged on (yet) - in which case the popup is not shown (cause there's nobody to show it to at the moment).
Well, Igor, you're the specialist, I'd say my computer is turned off and when I put it on, only way to get an internet connection is after log on, but you are the specialist. Anyway, this is a minor problem. It's true that if I leave my pc open, I have normal updates pop-up happenning.
AvastSvc.exe runs under the System account, as does avast.setup. They are running before a user logs on, starting when Windows boots up. That's how it can update before user login, and is also why Avast can update the program itself using the internal updater with a limited user logged.
AvastUI.exe on the other hand runs under the User account of the logged in user.
My comment is not directly related to the current beta, but since there are here posts about the tray notifications, I'd like to post anyway.
First, about connecting to internet before a user log in. My system is not capable of being connected to the internet if a user is not logged in, so under such configuration, the "SYSTEM" user is not able to update either. This is just a possible example of the situation described by
gdiloren. (I don't know if it is the same exact situation though).
I don't track down every database update against tray notifications, so I can't confirm (or not) if there is a problem as described by
gdiloren.
But I indeed know there are some "glitches" related to the tray icon and tray notifications (not specifically related to the current beta).
For example, let's assume the following situation (which I have experienced personally several times):
1_ there is a *program* update available;
2_ while Avast performs one of its automatic checks for available updates, it founds (during that specific update check) both a *program* update and a *database* update;
3_ a *program* update tray notification is displayed, but a *database* update tray notification is not displayed;
4_ I decide not to update the *program* yet (so no click on "update now" is performed);
5_ reviewing the consequences of this specific "automatic check for available updates", the *program* was not updated (which is fine, according to my choice), but the database was indeed updated, even when Avast didn't display any tray notification about it.
I'm happy with the database being updated even when I decided not to update the program yet, but there was no tray notification about it.
Another different glitch: the settings -> status bar -> "virus definitions version" is checked but not working (this one was tested using "manual" updates during several days).
Apologies if this is considered too much an OT.
