Compatibility issue with Firefox update?
« on: August 27, 2011, 02:57:16 PM »
Hello,

I use avast! pro antivirus on an old Windows 2000 Athalon machine, with Firefox 5.0 for the browser.
When I start to update Firefox to 6.0, I get a message saying that avast! WebRep 6.0.1203 is an incompatible add-on and will be disabled.  For the time being, I'm sticking with Firefox 5.0.

Has anyone else seen this, or know of any workarounds?

Thanks,
--Carl

Well, avast WebRep is not a security tool, but rather a voting mechanism for the webpage content.
Firefox security updates would be better than keep browser old version + avast WebRep.

If you install Add-on compatibility Reporter extension, you could force the use of WebRep and it still works on Firefox 6.
The best things in life are free.

- The fact that you don't see the WebRep or it doesn't work with the current firefox version, doesn't lessen the avast protection. You still have the Network Shield blocking known malicious sites and the Web Shield pre-scanning http content before it is displayed/run in your browser.

The WebRep is purely reputation based on avast user input. Later when the avast! virus labs start inputting information of detected malware, etc. into the webrep database, then it will be more of a security feature than just a reputational tool.

- The webrep works with the latest beta build of avast 6, so when this is released as a regular program update it will work with firefox 6. So my advice is use firefox 6 as it also has bug/security fixes included in it and wait for the next avast program update.
