random movement of mouse cursor
« on: November 04, 2004, 10:43:27 PM »
Hello
Recently my mouse cursor started to move at random times (without help from me :) ), and in a random vertical or horisontal direction. Just a few cm. Sometimes it returns to its original location. The movement is very quick, so I guess I miss several of them. I have asked forums at my computer producer (Fujitsu-Siemens) in case it is a hardware related problem, but I never know if I get an answer there. In case it is a virus, Ill ask here too. Hope someone can help me out here. I have search with Avast in vain.

PS: It is a laptop, but I use a PS2 mouse.

No. This is a ordinary PS2 mouse w/wheel. I do suspect virus since I a couple of days ago had massive trouble with worms etc (which I recieved excellent help for at these forums), and this mousetrouble is not older (I had to reformat my system..).

Searches on net reveal similarly problems, but they all seems very much more severe (like movements over the entire screen, random clicking etc :D ). Some said it was hardware, other viruses...

Did you put on a firewall and av software before going online?
Did you inmediatly installed all security patches/updates?
If not the system can already be infected again.

The problem can be the mouse itself. Have you tried another?

Absolutely! After I followed your receipt, Avast has not reported anything wrong. I have done 2 boot searches as well. Ill run Avast once again right now, but I have not turned off any firewalls since doing your diagnosis.

I have all updates; except SP2. I would rather not install it.

There is no reason not to install SP2. Find other related threads in these forums... Running SP2 from the very beginning without any single problem.

Random and all of a sudden mouse movements are 99% connected to hardware problem... to be clear, check your mouse... As Eddy mentioned, try hooking up another mouse to your system.

Ill do that (try another mouse).
SP2 did cause problems on my computer. Several movies I had did not play.

SP2 does not prevent the playing of movies. Settings can though ;)

And downloading of new (latest) version of codecs would solve your problem. I don't have problems watching movies and some stuff I recorded with my camera. I like to code my files into DivX and XviD, of course AC3 audio filter is always present.

My recomendation is K-Lite codecs pack.

In that case, I wish you do not enter in it, you can always come back here and ask for help. Besides avast scan, did you run SpyBot and/or Ad-aware to be sure this is not another thing than hardware?  ::)

Cheers !

Hi
I have installed SP2, and I can still watch my beloved movies!

Regarding mousesettings; I have the settings like you have. I have run AdAware, A2, SpyBot, Avast. No luck. So maybe I just have to live with it..:( ?
