Avast performs scan at start up - how to stop?
« on: November 06, 2004, 12:14:25 PM »
Using Windows XP Home.

Once the machine has booted and I click on my account, when the system tray starts loading the various icons/programs, Avast (with "show details" on) begins scanning a multitude of DLLs and EXEs.  After watching this behavior a few times, it appears Avast is scanning the contents of the Start Menu as well as perhaps the associated DLLs.

Is there a way to halt this behavior?  I've looked through the various settings, but see no mention of such behavior.  This might be some manner of speeding up access to the programs/DLLs later, but I prefer it to act as a true "on-access" scanner.

Thanks, Brian.

The on-access at boot time is really what is causing the low performance.

You can:

1) Set your sensitivity level to Normal (instead of High).

2) Use Startup Delayer 2.1.10 to set the startup order (and delay) of the programs. Remember, Windows does not have a deterministic order to start programs/services at boot.

This is perfectly normal behaviour. Let it be.
If you don't want Avast to show everything it does you can change it in the settings.
Start on-access control panel > standard shield > customize > advanched > untick "show detailed information"

it appears Avast is scanning the contents of the Start Menu
Again perfectly normal behaviour. The things in the start menu are stored in files. On-access scans files when they are accessed. They are so small, adding them to the exclusion list will not speed up things. At least not noticible. This has nothing to do with how fast applications start or not.

Oh, no... I think it has a lot of things related...
Ask Lars-Erik about this. Boot must be organized if you want efficency.
avast! could delay Windows boot for almost 1 minute... It's too much. You must surround the problem. I did and I'm happy  8)

I was refereing to starting things from the start menu and was my reaction to him saying:

Oops, sorry. You're right. That is normal behavior, i.e., access to the programs/DLLs  ;)

Could you specify what start order is nice? For those common startup items like Avast and all system related stuff.

1st part: avast and all other application that can't be handle by Startup Delayer, I mean, there must be an entry for them in the Windows Registry or Startup. Startup Delayer change the entries to an ini file into its folder.

After that the application in order of importance for you.
The delay time is another thing you must test and see what you get.

Hope this helps.
