Sony Memory Stick / Win XP SP2 / USB question
« on: November 05, 2004, 07:03:08 PM »
Question for ya..   my other half has a Sony Memory Stick that he uses to store some data on.    He uses this only with his laptop which has Win XP Pro,  SP2 installed on it.     Before installing SP2 , when he would insert the memory stick,  the window would automatcially pop up,  much as autorun does for CDs.    Since installing SP2 it no longer comes up.    Does XP Pro have a setting someplace for .. umm.. hmmm... autorunning or opening mem sticks???     I dont have access to the laptop ... will this afternoon... thought Ild pick your brains before taking a look at it.

After mounting the mem stick volume (drive), right click it in My Computer, select Properties and do what you need to do on the "AutoRun" tab.

Technical   .. humm..  I wonder if its something with my server where those pictures are stored?      Of course that would have to mean others would be seeing them as you are,   and I dont know that yet???

Can you see this ?

please let me know... and if it, and the flags, are not showing up as they should for others Ill remove them

Edit:  hey Technical...   I just remembered something,  regarding those red X's  ..    my other half sees them often from his laptop with SP2...   and the same sites show up fine with our desktop with 98...    i dunno  .

I can see them , and all other annimated gifs,  here with both IE and Firefox.

it won't work    :'(      He had already done this,;   I double checked it.    Also tried the stick without using the USB Hub... same result.   Tried updating the drivers for the hub,    same result.   Tried updating drivers for the mem stick... same result.   For now,  until we can resolve it for him,  Ive put a shortcut to it on his desktop.

@ connie,
I had a similar problem with a Sony memory stick and my IBM Thinkpad after sp2.
I resolved it by uninstalling the driver/utils software and reinstalling, and  re-formatting the stick.

Might be worth a try?

inthewild..     That was my thought too,  but there is no software for this one with XP...  you only use it if you are using 98 or 98SE.    I did though, uninstall the USB Hub and reinstalled it...  also reformatted the stick...    still not working.     He can get to it thru a shortcut I put on his desktop for him  (or thru My Computer)  but it doesnt autoplay even though its been set to do so.    It also doesnt on our 98SE machines WITH the software installed.   ::)     Just a minor nuisance

Very odd!

Probably some arcane sp2 settings that haven't been documented yet.

Conspiracy theory time, perhaps Bill G is upset about Playstation versus XBox!!!  ;) ;) ;)

it worked before SP2    :P  so I did of course figure that was it...     but it now also wont autoplay in 98SE either      lol       gotta love it

got to be worth an email to Sony corp hq in Japan, I'm sure a little "Googling" might point you in the right direction.  Go on .......... you know you want to!
