Problem with Avast free edition
« on: August 29, 2011, 11:21:11 AM »
Hi everybody,
I've been using Avast for years now, and regularly advising my friends to use it; but recently, i've come across the first problem with it.
This occurred on a Dell Dimension 4550, with Win XP Home SP 3.
I had just re-installed the OS using the Dell recovery CD, and I tried to instal Avast Free 6.
It did instal, but when it wanted to retrieve information for activation, it got a 404 error. It couldn't update anyway.
I was actually connected to the web, as I could download the software a few minutes before; I tried several times, but got the same error each time.
Shall we blame the Dell recovery CD?
Thanks a lot for any reply
Michael

Perhaps wait a day or two and try again. You don't need to register right away to get the benefits of avast! Free.

Hi you two,
Thanks for your replies, and sorry for being late.
1-No antivirus on the dell rec CD, and I did reboot after install
2-Can't wait, as the computer is gone now, I only had it for a couple of days. I just uninstalled Avast, and replaced it with MSE before giving it back to my friend.
If i meet the problem again, sure, I'll tell you.
Thanks again
Mike
