Update issue resulting in BSOD
« on: September 07, 2011, 06:59:45 AM »
Good morning,

This past evening around 8 p.m. (Sept. 6th), while offline and doing nothing, I suddenly got the BSOD.  After the memory dump completed, I disconnected the power then rebooted the computer.  When the boot was finishing, I was then connected (not by me...but by Microsoft) to a Microsoft site where I was informed the BSOD had occurred because of a problem with my Avast! software.

The first reason they gave was the event could have occurred because of a lack of the Avast being updated properly.   According to the info in Avast, the last definitions update (110906-1) was done on 9/6 at 4:14 p.m. (U.S. Eastern Standard Time).  Current program version is 6.0.1289 (updated sometime after 11 p.m. on 9/6 (U.S. EST).

Since Avast! is set to update automatically, I am wondering why this BSOD occurred in the first place?  I have also had 4 other BSOD episodes within the past month as well.

Any enlightenment would be appreciated!  Thank you for your time and review.

So, what version of avast are you running, exactly? (See the About Avast page in the Maintenance folder).

This is the latest, which is good.
But have you seen a BSOD with this version, or not?
There were some issues in the previous versions, but the latest one should be much better in that aspect.

Thanks
Vlk

Hi again Vlk...

I'm uncertain on the answer to your question at the moment, since after reading that message from Microsoft, I immediately went and manually updated Avast!...to be certain I had the latest of everything!  If a recurrence of the BSOD happens with the current version installed, I'll create another post to advise you of it.

Many thanks for your time and review!

Getting a bluescreen too after the update.

WinXP(SP3) and it´s a Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL whopper on bootup only.

Very unhappy as AVAST is great compared to the other alternatives that are annoying the heck out of you with their toolbars and popups.
