Update Problem
« on: September 07, 2011, 04:38:44 AM »
Hi! I'm using Avast Free that I download last month (August), and on July. The first installation had updating issue, so I reinstall it with newer version (August). But, sadly, it still has the same problem. The problem is: the program can detect that the server has new update (current: 110704-1, latest: 110906-1). But, when I click update button, the progress bar shows no progress. So, I assume the problem is in my windows XP, something to do with service or else. What should I do then?

Try a repair of avast first via remove programs, double click avast and scroll down to repair and click and ok it, once done reboot.
If that does not solve your issue, have you removed all remnants of you previous av with the correct removal tool ? find removal tool here http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software/ run the correct tool for any av you have used in the past and reboot.
If still no luck then download a freash copy of avast and save  http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe also download the avast removal tool and save http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe, delet avast through remove programs then reboot into safe mode ( tap F8 while booting for safe mode ) now run the removal tool and reboot back into normal mode, if you have ccleaner run it otherwise you can get it here http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim, once you've cleaned your system you can now reinstall avast.

Please let us know how you go with it.

In addition to craigb's suggestions, have you rebooted after install and before checking for updates?

Besides that, try:

Avast main GUI -> settings ->

-> updates -> "Direct connection (no proxy)"

-> troublesooting -> "Load Avast service after other system services".

Any firewall that might be blocking avast.setup?

Then reboot, test and report back.

Thanks for the response. This is the last news: Yesterday, I try to turn off the automatic update. After I restart my PC, I try manual update process. And, voila: it works! But then, after some time... The process paused... Please see the snapshot above, that's where the process paused. Help!

Finally, I have the solution for my problem. The solution is: I must download the database manually @ http://www.avast.com/download-update... (Silly me...)

So, this is my conclusions:
  • Maybe, I did improper uninstallation, so the virus database is kinda stuck on the old version.
  • Maybe, the installation file exclude the database, so you better download the database also.
  • Maybe, the server stuck on the file that I captured.

Anyway, thanks for the response, again. :)

@ultima.ramza,

Glad you solve the problem. Please keep monitoring the updates, since we have seen before that the manual complete download of the database only solves the problem temporarily, until a new database is available and a reboot is performed.

So, if tomorrow you see that the updates are being applied correctly, excellent. If not, then try the above suggestions in this topic.
