schmidthouse the next thing I might try would be to refresh your system back  to when you first installed 8 and then do the update from the store ( but that would mean reinstalling all programs ) "or" download the iso from the link in Bobs post earlier and install offline and that should work.

Thanks Craig, appreciate the time. Mmm a Refresh, have definitely considered that as deferred option at this point, but definitely doable.
Yes I saw Bobs link. That's an RTM so will that cause a validation/registration issues down the road as that would be, shall we say, not the typical way to get the 8.1 upgrade?

A quote from Ivo, the author of Classic Shell after I posted in their forum that the 8.1 upgrade broke the program.

Yes, this is a known limitation: http://www.classicshell.net/faq/#general_win81

The problem is that the upgrade wipes out the registry where Classic Shell is installed. So after the upgrade Classic Shell doesn't have the opportunity to run and repair itself.
One possible solution is to install a service on Windows 8, whose only job is to detect when the upgrade happens. But that's an overkill.

And from their FAQ,

If you upgrade Windows from 8 to 8.1 with the option to preserve the programs, the start menu will not automatically run after boot. You will need to re-run the installer of Classic Shell and choose the “Repair” option.

If you're updating your Dell Mini, you'll again need to fix the display problem.
I just had to follow my own tutorial and now have it set for 1024X768 which took care of the Apps not loading problem.

Not on a Dell Mini, but an Acer Aspire One, Win7 Starter (32bit) 10.1", 1024X600 screen. Presumably it wouldn't just be specific to the Dell Mini but other 1024x600 resolution screens.

However, that said I'm not considering updating that from win7 to win8.

I can't guarantee that it would work on others since I have no way to try it but, it should work on others since it's a simple registry change.
Should you want to try it, just back up the registry befor you make any changes. (This last comment was meant for novice users)

Only a Refresh of Win8 and then the upgrade through store worked.
Still, as reported in previous posts, download and install took about 3 hours.
Anyway, laughin now.

My update on the Dell MINI also went smoothly using the Microsoft Store.
Only problem I had was to again fix the Video output to an acceptable size.
That wasn't a problem, I had a good teacher.

Was avast not aware that windows was planning an upgrade?  Why am I paying for avast protection that isn't available with the upgrade?  Should I just drop avast and go with an application that is more current?  Any body have any suggestions for a working, good internet security application?

avast! 2014 is fully compatible with Windows 8.1.
Joining a forum simply to complain about something that really doesn't make sense isn't of any benefit for anyone.

I'm not going to upgrade to W8.1 for a while from MS Store until they release the MS patches for W8.1, because their might be some minder bugs and my Autodesk Revit Structure software is not ready for W8.1 until they release the next version.
