Lucky it is a leap year or we could be waiting 4 years.
Wrong month,   one day late and it would wind up to be my Anniversary Present.  :)

I just read another article on ZDNet and the following quote is very telling I think.

Quote
From the perspective of the consumer and enterprise, an upgrade to Windows 8 in late 2012 or early 2013 means getting all new Windows software from the new Microsoft Windows Store (the “App Store”) if they want to take advantage of the new Metro features on x86 PCs.

The likely outcome is that Windows 7 is going to remain the most popular version of desktop Windows until a significant number of applications are ported over to the new Metro/WinRT environment. So we can expect both consumer and corporate adoption of Windows 8 at least on the desktop to be slow. Very slow.

The bottom line is that there’s very little incentive to move to Windows 8 at all if you’re just going to be running the same Win32 apps you have today.
I fully expect Win 8, in the consumer market, to be the new Vista with only people getting new PC's having it and half of them "downgrading" to Win 7. I doubt if many retail upgrades will be sold at all.

There are many that happen to like the speed and other improvements made in Windows 8  :)

It may be a little faster but every new feature I see presented makes me less and less likely to bother with it. Since I'll probably follow my pattern on getting a new machine every 6 years, I know I'll be skipping Win 8. Nobody can deny that Win 7 is an excellent OS.

This is the link to the article. It's not totally pessimistic about Win 8 at all, it's just in the consumer and enterprise  market that the guy agrees with another of his colleagues whose article is also linked to that it will bomb.

It's a good thing that we are all entitled to our opinions. :)

I can't see leaving Win 7 for this. To me, this interface may work fine on a phone or tablet but NOT a PC. Is it just me or is Metro UGLY?  I'll try the preview when it comes out, But I doubt it will change my mind.

Windows 8 seems to have take decisions to move forward mobile and touch screen.
Desktop users seems to have got a step backwards.

That is the thing which gets most of the negative publicity, over an above what extra are you getting in win8 that you don't have (and need) in win7 and is it worth the price.

I think they are taking a big risk with designing an OS that is so geared to touch screen devices, without giving and easy classic desktop option without constantly having to go through Metro. I have to say when I first saw the Metro interface of windows phone 7, I though it boxy and butt ugly and it hasn't improved.

I had been hanging back on this XP system until more on win8 was known before replacing it, not particularly wanting win7 (don't like it that much on my netbook either), but win8 in its current form doesn't appeal to me either. What now, Linux ???

Even if this proves to be the new Vista as Dch48 thinks, Vista still made MS billions (for such a so called failure), so success is hard to gauge in that light.

Well I stuck with XP and was happy with it until the games coming out needed a more powerful graphics solution (couldn't upgrade my laptop in that way) and at least a dual core CPU. I got a great deal on this new laptop with Win 7 Home Premium 64 and I have to say that after the initial few days of acclimation, I think it's much better than XP in every way. It boots faster and has a lot more capabilities built in. The changes I see in Win 8 don't appeal to me at all. From the Metro UI to the redesigned explorer with the horrid ribbon UI and almost everything in between I have to say no thanks. I have never changed an OS on any machine I have ever owned and don't see it happening with this either. I will probably give IE 10 a go though.

And what started as a simple "window" to compliment the product name became a flying or waving flag. But if you look back to the origins of the logo you see that it really was meant to be a window.
(AskVG.com | Windows 8 Gets New Metro Style Logo, Goodbye Windows Flag)

I like the vivid colored flag just the way it is. I see that the 'window' is a historic idea, but my vista flag looks okay just the way it is. :P
