I still don't see the killer function/feature that 'dominates' giving any reason to upgrade. I don't see anything that I don't already have that I need/absolutely must have.
You also didn't have to upgrade to DSL :)  ;D

Come on Bob if that is your justification by comparing apples and oranges it lacks comparison. When there is a killer reason to have DSL over dial-up.

They both have something in common: Speed

No Bob they are completely unrelated or we would all be driving round in Formula 1 cars by the same apples and oranges comparison.

From all reports, the speed increase of Windows 8 is minimal at best unlike the comparison cited. It is apples and oranges.

No killer features in win8 worth the upgrade but as I mentioned somewhere else previously there are some nice little tweaks in system optimisation and resource usage.

Vista and Win7 also had no killer features that was worth the upgrade from XP but hey " we did it anyway " ;)

Not a good comparison Bob ???

The simple answer is that it's your computer and your decision.

Unless you use it on a daily basis, please don't attempt to knock something you aren't familiar with.
I not only use Windows 8 daily but, have also used all other Windows operating systems since Windows 3.0
I think that puts me in a pretty good position to be able to compare the different systems.
Windows 8 is their best operating system to date despite some of the criticisms. The lack of a start button being one of them.
Despite the shortcomings, Microsoft has made many improvements in this new version.
Updating is always a decision that needs to be made by the individual user.
It would certainly have been a smart move to purchase Windows 8 Pro while it was still available for under $40.00 and,
is not as easy a decision now when the price is about $200.00.
One also has to consider that progress and change isn't accepted easily by all.
Some fight progress and change with as much conviction as some of us welcome it.

Bob you tell us not to knock something which we haven't tried, yet in the same breath you knock everyone else who isn't using it as fighting progress and change:

Change just for changes sake isn't progress, there has to be a reason to change; just like your comparison of DSL or Dial-up, there was a bloody good reason to change once it became available.

Motivation for change also differs in people. Which is why the glass is always half full for some (like myself) and half empty for others.
I didn't knock anyone, simply stated a fact. There is a difference. :)

We too are stating facts, where is the killer function/feature that makes it worth our while and money to upgrade, currently I find very little reason.

This system is almost 5 years old but it does everything that I need of it and meets my requirements. As and when I decide to replace it, I will decide on what OS I will purchase then based on my requirements/needs. Having just added more RAM, changed to a silent/passive graphics card and just replaced my monitor, I don't think that will be any time soon.

It is your prerogative (users Choice) as I've already stated. I thought it was worth the $40.00 investment. (My Choice)

To me, the only thing I find attractive in Win 8 is the improved recovery options. Since I have never had to use System Restore, even that isn't enough of a reason to switch.
