4.5 beta install
« on: November 09, 2004, 09:02:27 PM »
Hello All,
This evening I attempted the installation of Avast 4.5 beta.
I did this by right clicking the link and save as, to avast setup folder,
this appeared to go ok. I then installed the program which I also thought
   went ok.
However on restarting the comp. as requested by the install. I then found
   my computer in big trouble.
System tray icons missing. no network connection.attempt to do anything
   and system froze.
I tried system restore in Safe mode to a point just before download but still
same. Also tried to last good configuration still same.
I only had one more restore point from yesterday, and using this in Safe
mode brought comp back to life.
Computer had been working ok before.
I have Windows xp home with SP2.
Asus A7N8x mobo. AMD 1800xp cpu.
I know the release version of 4.5 is due later this week, so I am a little
concerned, as to what I may have done wrong to have caused such a big
   problem.

Thanks for any advice you may help me with.
                                   Mal.

Do you have some kind of firewall installed? What is your network connection?

I'm just wondering if it could be caused by the new network protection... would it help if you uninstalled (or didn't install, if uninstalled already) the Network Shield and Internet Mail providers?

Hello Igor and duke,
I  have Sygate free edition firewall installed.
 Network connection is ADSL 512.
I cannot say about network shield or internet mail providers as I could not do anything, system froze. and having got comp back working, I thought iI would seek advice first.
Duke, I tried repair in Avast, but it said could not connect to server, so just had to get out of this situation.
I think when I go into Menu and look at update programme it would attempt
to upgrade if I let it as if this beta upgrade is still downloaded.
Comp is working ok at the moment, but thinking ahead to the new version..
Thanks for your replies so far,     Mal.

Check your firewall logs, sygate may be blocking avast.

Hi again,
I should have made clear that having used  system restore I am back on avast 4.1.512.

Duke,
Avast was not blocked by sygate but my isp was.
But what about freezing and missing icons in sys tray.
Also when the install of 4.5 was done it was updated to the latest beta version, so I would have thought internet connection was ok then.

I just tried repair of avast and this put me straight back into trouble so had to use system restore in safe mode. Frozen again.
Should I uninstall avast and start again?

Do you have any other antivirus installed in your computer?
Did you try to repair your installation through Control Panel?

Hello technical,
thanks for your reply, if you see my last post I did try repair through control panel, which crashed my comp again so had to restore.
No I do not have any other Anti Virus programme installed.
Should I uninstall and start again?

Please, try to reinstall without the two providers I mentioned (Network Shield and Internet Mail). After it's done and you see that the computer is running correctly, you may try to add the providers to the installation (using the Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs). This way, we'll see if the problem is really here. Thanks!

Igor,
I have downloaded Avast av from website, and put it on cd. so should I use that to install after removing existing avast installation through control panel add remove.
Where do I see the option not to install network shield and internet mail?
               Thanks    Mal.

Actually, it may be a little problem (since you don't have the full installer for 4.5, only 4.1). What avast! version do you use - Home or Pro?

Igor,
     perhaps I should clarify.
In my attempt to install Beta 4.5 I have created a problem when comp had been ok.
In attempts to repair this caused comp to freeze so I used system restore, which got comp working.
I am now using 4.1.512 but 4.5 is lurking in the background because if I went into avast menu and attempted to update programme then it would if I let it install 4.5 again along with problems.
What I wish to do is remove all traces of avast av and then reinstall 4.1.512
to get me back to when all was ok. I could do that from CD.
Then if then all ok with 4.1.512 await the release version of 4.5.
I have to go out for a while so will follow up when I return.
   Thanks a lot          Mal

OK, I'm slightly confused about the numbers, because there is nothing like 4.1.512.

There's avast! 4.1 (4.1.501), and avast! 4.5 beta (4.5.512).
So, if you simply want to get back to 4.1, then yes - you can just put the downloaded installer to CD and install it. There's no Network Shield inside 4.1, so just ignore what I wrote previously.

However, if the betaversion doesn't work for you, it's quite likely that the final 4.5 won't work either - because there really won't be much difference between the final release and the current beta (and you are the only one having this kind of problem).
If you want to experiment a little, I could send you a link for the full 4.5 beta installer (i.e. something you can start on a system without avast!, and you can select the modules to install during the setup - no need to perform an update over existing avast! 4.1) - so, you could try if the new avast! 4.5 feature (the Network Shield) is really the cause of your problems (therefore, I was asking if it should be Home or Pro).
