Hi Jayme and welcome to the Avast! Forums!

Until some of the more experienced forum members, Moderators, and/or Admin staff can review your post, I have one question:  Have you tried re-installing Avast! to see if the problems you described are still occurring?

Also, are you using any other security software on your computer, if so, would you please provide the name(s) of the software?

Thank You!

hello
Firstly, thank you for your attention.

yes, I re-installed the version 5.0.667 and updated virus definitions only, with this configuration everything works normally.

No, I do not use other security software.

Thanks very much for the additional information.  At this point, I think it best to wait a day or two and see if some of the previously mentioned forum members stop by to review your problem(s), and provide some further input.

Please update Avast to its latest program version. If you downloaded that old version just yesterday, then uninstall that, since it is not so normal to download old versions, unless there is some specific conflict in your particular system.

We have I suspect the same problem.

Windows XP SP3 fully patched.

Webshield prevents any access to the internet via a web browser. I have tried Firefox and IE.
Mailshield prevents access to a POP3 Mail server. Other network traffic OK so far, although not much further investigation carried out.

When I disable Webshield and Mailshield Browsers and mail work OK again.

That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about very "basic" issues, like for example not being able to boot at all, or BSOD with no workarounds, no patches, no clue at all, and after trying MANY possible solutions / workarounds.

If, for "any" (even noncritical) problem, the user were to be requested (suggested) to install a previous version, that would mean that the latest version is really - really - a disaster.

expensive

The issue is not to say that the latest version is a disaster, I always choose the best security software and since I installed avast until before your last update he has behaved as such.

In this forum, there are others the same topics, which are really well described in more detail, whose problems are basically the same, ie, solving their problems would be solved also mine.

the following topics:

Avast can not use anymore:  http://forum.avast.com/index.php?Topic=85101.0

free avast blocking Internet access in Windows 7: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=85252.0

Avast Free is Causing problems with FF & Chrome Already for four days - please fix: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?Topic=85092.0

I think the problem I've been going through must be communicated to many other users and complaints will increase as they upgrade their versions.

not to mention general users not in the habit of discussing their problems in forums like these (at least in my country: Brazil).

I hope the "AVAST" can solve the problem.

thanks

Any other security program installed? Old antivirus?

Try installing version 5.0.582 or 5.1.889 and update the program to the latest version, and then (if necessary) re-install google chrome.

Why this "update" method would be of any solution? If the latest version works for the OP, he can install it directly. If it doesn't, then why would he want to update?

@jayme,

Please answer Tech's question. It is not about your "currently installed" security tools, but also about tools that used to be there and you already uninstalled.

I got the impression from your first post that Avast was running fine during a long period of time, and only after you update the program to the latest version your problems started. If I understood correctly, then probably security tools that were already uninstalled are not related (but, we never know).

Unfortunately, this topic has more OT than real contributions. If you want to be more specific in your answers, and you still want to try to find a solution so you can use the latest version of Avast, please report back.

I notice no one asked the OP what firewall he was using?

Since Avast 6.x with web shield and mail shield enabled uses a localhost proxy for Internet access and e-mail, I strongly suspect his problems are firewall related. Check the FAQs section on how to configure the Avast firewall for web and mail shields and use those guidelines to configure your respective firewall.

For example, your firewall must allow all outbound TCP traffic from localhost(127.0.0.1) to port 12080. It also has to give unrestricted access to avastsvc.exe to receive the above outbound connection from localhost and to allow avastsvc.exe to send IP traffic to TCP outbound port 80. Remember that when using Avast web shield, it is avastsvc.exe that is actually handling Internet TCP activity.
