Flash player update failed
« on: September 21, 2011, 03:35:46 PM »
I'm trying to update my Flash Player and it says to temporarily disable your antivirus program.  I've read all the posts about this topic, but they were written several years ago.  I tried to update the Flash Player without disabling Avast! and it wouldn't work.  I have windows 7.  What can I do?  There must be an easy way to turn off Avast without changing all the settings.  Thanks for your help.  PS  I need very detailed instructions since I'm not a computer geek. PPS How do I receive notification by email when there is a reply to my post?

A notice came up when I opened Firefox this morning that my Flash Player was out of date.  I clicked on the link.  I will try to update it out of Adobe to see what happens.  It is very odd:  I went to the Adobe site and the Flash Player updated successfully without my having to disable Avast!

You can also find the latest flash versions here http://www.filehippo.com/download_flashplayer_firefox/10462/ there direct installers so theres no adobe install manager which is great, uninstall earlyer version first before installing new.

Adobe Flash security update v10.3.183.10 install files are posted.  See my links above.

So far, http://www.adobe.com/support/security/ does not reflect this release.

Finally, the Adobe Security bulletin has been posted.  http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb11-26.html

Q.

Can you just run the uninstaller for Flash, or do you do the 'add-remove' software first?

Thanx.

I have been using MajorGeeks for a long time to download, and save, both the newest Flash uninstaller and the newest Flash installer versions. I then run the Flash uninstaller, and then run the new flash installer. I have never uninstalled flash through programs and features and I have never had a problem.

I've never had a problem updating Flash either through the Adobe site or from the direct download link and I never use add/remove or run the uninstaller. I don't see a need for that. I also have never disabled any AV on any machine to do it.

You are right.

If you download the correct executable installation package (.exe) from Adobe.com (http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/fp_distribution3.html) you don't need to uninstall the old version, because the installation package is actually an installer/uninstaller.
To check this, you can right-click on the executable installation package and select "properties": the file description should report "Adobe® Flash® Player Installer/Uninstaller".

EDITED: the link was incomplete.

You are talking about instalations regarding the Adobe install manager through adobe's website where as most people here prefer not to use the install manager and use the direct installer via the links that have been supplied earlyer in this thread.
You can either uninstall your current version via remove programs then install the new or install straight over the top as iv found both ways work correctly, i never found any need for the actual flash uninstall tool as its exactly the same as the uninstaller that is built into the flash player itself.

Nope. I'm talking about the executable installation packages (.exe) used to distribute Flash Player to end-users.

Basically they are the same installation packages you can find via the links that have been provided in this thread by Gopher John.

Check by yourself the Plugin-based browsers version:

My link: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/fp_distribution3.html (you have to choose the .exe installer)

Gopher John's link: http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe
