No I can't exclude because avast creates random folders like
\11092801 and \11092800
Zone alarm thinks it it is diffrent. Why does Avast have to repeatedly delete and create these folders. It is bloody stupid and causing me a Headache!

and it ceeps trying to connect to servers with difrent IP addreess's
224.0.0.252
224.0.0.253
239.255.255.250

Avast hide behind this and are not contactable.

Yep, but he either doesn't read our answers or plainly ignores them. ::)

WHY, because the sf.bin is a part of the virus definitions and engine, when there is a new virus definitions update there is a new folder created for it. We (well I have) been telling you you need to manually create an exclusion for sf.bin using a wildcard to cater for the fact that the folder changes.

This is what you are trying to exclude or make an exception for, C:\program files\AVAST Software\Avast\defs\*\Sf.bin, the * asterisk being a wildcard that means it will cater for the changing folders.

I haven't the slightest idea how to do this in zone alarm, it is over 8 years since I used it.

sf.bin is the emulator part of avast! - so as I said, it shouldn't connect anywhere (meaning it's not required for its functionality).

If this is the case why can't I delete it. Windows will not let me do this. probably because it is in use.

And todays new windows folder folks is .........
C:\program files\AVAST Software\Avast\defs\11100100\Sf.bin

With all due respect, please re-read the complete topic. This doesn't make much sense. Something might be wrong, but apparently it is not Avast.

Block those connections, or take it with ZA, or use the special removal tool of Avast (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) to uninstall Avast under Windows Safe Mode, delete all firewall rules related to Avast, and reinstall Avast anew.

Then the firewall should request again for the correct permissions (avastsvc.exe, avastui.exe, avast.setup...).

Other than that, I don't think there is much to do on Avast side.

THERE is no point in this. If you read my post correctly, avast does not stick to the same folder. It deletes the folder create a new one with a new 8 digit number. ZA is working correctly as it sees this as new. I have sent an email to avast under their contact us. They have yet to reply. I doubt they ever will. They like everyone else here tries to blame the other guy. In this case ZA. ZA works fine with everything else on my PC. But because it doesn’t work with a strange behaving Avast then it must be at fault. I keep hearing that sf.bin should not be doing this. Maybe if I shout louder the avast team might hear about it.

@otuatail,

First, please use the "quote" tags to quote other posts (you failed to do that more than once already).

Second, I clearly read the complete topic (and I state this here because you are suggesting I didn't), but YOU are not. Those folders are not completely random, and DavidR already explained twice the only possible option you have. There is no "blaming each other" (ZA/Avast). A possible solution was given (twice) and you completely disregard it. Either you read and follow the instructions and then report back, or there isn't much more anyone can do/say.

If your case was happening "a lot", we would see complaints all over the forum. We don't. So either users have a way to avoid this problem (whichever the method/way, I don't know and I don't care by now), or users are simply stop using either one of the two programs in questions.

You were told again and again and again, by several forum members including one Avast Team member, that sf.bin is not doing that ZA is saying it is. Either you follow the workaround already explained, or... well, or I don't really know how we can explain it more clearly.

Maybe if ouatail knew that it is ZoneAlarm causing the problem then he might not complain as much.

sf.bin is avast emulation process , it's position changes all the time (aka it's not static) ...

to create wildcard i suggest to use C:\*\*\sf.bin wildcard or w/e Zonelarm accepts like *\sf.bin

these connections You see aren't in fact any connections but in fact multicast requests
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multicast
http://www.networksorcery.com/enp/protocol/ip/multicast.htm

and SSDP
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_Service_Discovery_Protocol

so to put fast end to this thread either sf.bin or process emulated inside is trying send some *cast

I already suggested a manual exclusion with wildcard in this topic Reply #34 above, but it was basically ignored.

So at that point I gave up banging my head against a brick wall.

maybe someone should clean-up this topic with the correct answer about multicast as the only response. then lock it.  ;D

Wouldn't help much, as the OP tends to open new topics or posts in unrelated ones.
