Smadav Legit? Or Malware?
« on: September 25, 2011, 05:43:11 PM »
An Indonesian friend over on MyOpera says she was already using avast Free.
Then a friend recommended that she should also use this "Smadav" because it was a "Local Anti-Virus" and would thus find the local Viruses better.   ::)

Well, she says almost immediately, now her computer is slow / sluggish.
Of course, a couple of us immediately informed her that for starters, she cannot be having 2 Anti-Viruses installed at the same time as that in itself will cause the problem she's already experiencing.  However, we also have our doubts as to the legitimacy factor of that "Local Anti-Virus" Smadav.

Any insights on this mysterious Smadav?  Is it a Rogue Anti-Virus?

Thanks, Asyn, Pondus.
The original link I checked out to the Smadav website is written in Indonesian.
So, I have no idea whether it's just On Demand or Resident / Real Time.
Well, we already recommended to that woman to uninstall one of the two Anti-Viruses, preferably the Smadav.  But, we can never twist arms.  It's up to her whether she does it or not.  She obviously knows that her computer slowed down as soon as she installed the Smadav.  It's now in her hands.

Hi Chim,

Smadav seems a legit av solution at first glance, but I would not rank it with the best and in some ways it could be viewed upon as a rogue av, like this one from here -http://downloadsmadav.blogspot.com/
Programs like these are so-called "ansav" programs because they try to scare you into purchasing the program by displaying fake security warnings and false scan results. So I would stay away from it,

Yeah, me personally, I still think it's fishy.
