When I was in Norway on Arctic training (two three month trips, Jan, Feb & Mar) we would occasionally get whale meat. Can't say I liked the taste that much, that said I didn't like Horse meet when we were in France (French Military Base) either.

Hi DavidR & Pondus,

Well some do not eat horse because their religion does not allow,
as for instance the Old Russian Orthodox  старообрядцы do not eat horsemeat. hare etc.
But I have heard that in England they eat grey squirrel. Is that tasty?
Some say it gives a distinctly sweet flavour to your stew...
In medieval Frisia they have put swans to the table. But then the swan must not be older that a couple of months,
other big birds were just for decorational purposes...

Lots of Americans eat grey squirrels too. I never have but I have heard that they have a very sweet taste.

Hi friends,

Here is a link that is a mix of being on topic and off-topic. At least it has something to do with this forum, virus hoaxes and realities...
and where the hoaxes are concerned, there are many that deserve a good laugh.
What about the Budweiser Frog Screensaver hoax: http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/budfrogs.asp
Oh and mind not to get onto this list (hoax): http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/hackers.asp
There are many more there and also serious threats described,

Enjoy,

Back to exotic foods ...
Way the heck back when I was still working, our general manager would treat us to dinner, or an approximation of same, around Christmas.  There were only about 6 of us, so it wasn't a major burden for him.  Our favorite was the all-you-can-eat buffet at Bingemann's (local family-run trailer park plus recreation areas plus a couple of good restaurants) until that was, alas, discontinued sometime in the late 80's or early 90's.

We tried other places for a couple of years after that, but couldn't find a good substitute, so he switched to bringing in things from home.  One year it was assorted sliced cold cuts, cheeses and salads, and there was one kind of sausage I found so tasty that I gobbled nearly all of it down myself.  When I asked him afterwards what it was, he said it was moose.

And once, combining curiosity with a sort of self-dare, I picked up a small tin of octopus to give it a try.  Unfortunately, it was packed in a very heavy and oily tomato sauce, so to this day I haven't a clue what the octopus itself tasted like, only that it was somewhat rubbery in texture.

I never found Squid (first tried in a Bar in Thessalonica) or Octopus had much of a taste of anything, just a bland and rubbery texture, all of the taste seems to come from the sauce/flavouring added to the flesh.

Hi DavidR,

It is with all these exotic foods, octopus and snakes alike, that the taste is in the sauce.
If you like garlic sauce (try the young green variety), you can leave the snakes and other rubbery tasting creatures out for me.
Grenouille tastes somewhat like... like drumsticks, so order drumsticks with your favourite green garlic sauce.
But it always comes down to what your mother used to put on the table. The rest of the family never had what she did not like,
because these meals were never served. For instance when I think of Scotland I have to think of a lot of things,
but also of tartar sauce, because I like that an awful lot. And vinegar on my "chish and fibs".

I hate tartar sauce and actually prefer catsup on fried and breaded fish. For exotic foods, I was stationed near Yuma, AZ back in 1969-70 and was invited to a buffet dinner one night. On the table was a plate of this flaky white meat that looked kind of like tuna but much whiter. I tried it and liked it a lot until I asked what it was and was told it was rattlesnake. I couldn't eat any more of it after that revelation. They also had octopus and it was like trying to eat a piece of an old inner tube. I have tried gator tail in Florida and it's quite good. Buffalo is also good but beefalo is some of the best meat I have ever had.

Hi Dch48,

Did not beefalo start in Utah? Near where I live in Holland they rear galloways. Seems to give wild  first quality meat also,
Galloway-rib for a Sunday roast...
