Log=20
DefaultPopServer=
DefaultSmtpServer=
ShowTrayIcon=1
UseDefaultSmtp=0

Do you have the mail providers installed?
control panel > add/remove programs > Avast > change/repair

Check it, just to make sure.

You can simply create the Mail Scanner section, using a text editor.

Just enter the [MailScanner] before one of the other section (so there is no data relating to something else), then you can add the additional lines as suggested previously and see if that works.

Yes Eddy it is installed, and running. I just did not have the [Mail scanner] in my avast4ini file. However, I just customized my internet mail provider, and the [Mail Scanner] is now listed. Why would that happen? Why was it not there before? I had the mail provider running! Although it was at default setting.

Looks like that for some odd reason something went wrong during the update or the mail provider wasn't running/installed.

Ok, now that I got [Mail Scanner] in my avastini file, I did the following.

1) Open the file avast4.ini in "C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Data\"
2) In the section [MailScanner] add the following line:
AutoRedirect=0

3) Run Pop wizard - that is
3a) change to the folder C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\
3b) execute ashPopWz.exe

4) in the basic settings dialog, choose Automaticaly protect all my accounts

5) default pop3 and smtp server leave on shawmail

This worked, and my mail is now being scanned just fine, even with Zone alarm active.

So what exactly did that do? Did it just revert me to the old style of e-mail scanning?

The mail provider was running, and installed. By making the custom settings, it was like it woke it up or something. This was a clean install of 4.5, not an update. I did however let Avast update itself originally, but my mail still did not work then either.

The [mailscanner] section wasn't there, Avast was not able to correctly handle the email scanning since it couldn't find the settings. What you just did was basicly like setting up the email protection rules as if you just had installed Avast.

Glad to hear this one is solved now also :D

Eddy, even after making the custom settings in my mail provider, and having [Mail Scanner] appear in my avast4ini file, my mail was still not working with zone alarm active.

It was only after adding add the following line:
AutoRedirect=0, and running the Pop wizard that my mail worked again with Zone alarm active.

So am I now using the old style of e-mail scanning?  Still a bit confused.

Hi again,
Everything was working ok this evening, then an update... e-mail stopped working again!!!

The only thing that lets me send / receive mail is to set incoming mail server to 127.0.0.1, and outgoing to smtp.metronet.co.uk - Bizarre.

In this same thread ealier, I mentioned that the previous fault was fixed by adding autoredirect=0 in the .ini file.

Seems to work ok now, but a comment by one of you fine, hard-worked tech guys might help!

The recommended solution is outlined in the FAQ: http://www.avast.com/eng/email_problems.html#idt_6796. The text assumes that you have not changed the AutoRedirect value (i.e. it is set to 1 which is the default).

Please make sure to have the latest build (4.5.523). Previous builds might had problems, especially when used together with ZoneAlarm (I don't know if that applies to you).

Thanks

Thanks Vlk

XP sp2 / Mailwasher / Outlook

Yes I have 4.5.523. The e-mail was working half an hour ago, but then had problems when avast updated itself.

I had set autoredirect to 0 two days ago to fix the first problem.

Just to add to the mix,

XP SP2
Mailwasher Pro
Outlook
Zone Alarm

Both Mailwasher and Outlook configured to directly access mail providers (4 accounts) ie no 127.0.0.1

Outlook works fine, but Mailwasher times out.

Disable Zone Alarm and it works fine.

Look forward to a solution, as I rely on Mailwasher fairly heavily.

Chask, please enable Mail Scanner logging (see here for instructions on how to do this: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=8730;start=msg71768#msg71768 ) and post the contents of the log while MailWasher timed out.

BTW are you using the latest build of avast (4.5.523)?

Thanks
Vlk
