Chask, please enable Mail Scanner logging (see here for instructions on how to do this: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=8730;start=msg71768#msg71768 ) and post the contents of the log while MailWasher timed out.

BTW are you using the latest build of avast (4.5.523)?

Thanks
Vlk

Good morning, Vlk!
Do you have any idea why I'm having problems with OE...in my thread, I said that it's now become a recurring problem.
When I first log on, it may be working just fine, then when I log off for any period of time and log on again, the problem is back.
To refresh your memory, when I log back on, on-access shows that a subsystem is waiting to run on internet mail, 7 providers, 5 running, error log still only shows the originial one from the release date.
Rebooting does not help--I have to shut everything down for awhile then power up for it to work properly.
Hope I am making sense!

Thanks

My problem is now fixed!!

Prior to installing the latest version of Avast, I was running e-trust EZ AntiVirus and had the email scanner activated.

Disabled that and the timeout problem has gone away.

Now just need to decide which of the two scanners I would prefer to have checking my email.

Having two antiviruses running in the same time on same machine won't give you any good... unless you're using one for On-Access Scanning and the other one just for occasional system checkings... something as backup scanner.

Btw, avast! never ever failed on me while checking my mails. You won't regret if you choose avast!  ;)

It does not help...  :'(
I can't send smtp authenticated mail... It's boring that you can't discover what's wrong.
Look, the beta worked all right, what happened with 4.5.523 ? What was changed?  :'(  :'(

<textProxA><textProxE>I have an e-mail problem also.  The on-access scanner was removed from the boot when I installed DSL.  I uninstalled the previous version of Avast then downloaded the new version.  Outlook Express works fine, just like always.  However, MailWasher (free) sends a " connection refused, ensure POP server is correct" message.  I have made no changes to the configuration I had to make to get it to work with the prior Avast version. (see other forum topic)

The answers in this thread confuse me.  Do I now need to undo the 127.0.0.1 username#@myispxxx.net or is there another problem?

Thanks for your help - voirdire

Set all those settings exactly as you would set them if avast! doesn't exist on your system. That means, original pop3 and smtp server names, as well as your loggin name and password... E-mail handling in avast! 4.5 is automatic. Of course it's important to know what OS you are running ?

I've been reading all of this with interest because I too had problems with the email scanner.  So, to add to the ever-growing database of information, here's mine:

OS: Win XP Home
Email client: Eudora 6.1
Firewall: Zone Alarm

So, there was no conflict between ZA and Avast (for me) and the problem was fixed by me removing SSL on my main email account.

Hi all,

maybe this piece of information is helpful: I've got avast 4.5.523, Outlook Express 6 and *several* mail accounts.  All accounts that use POP3 and IMAP work fine for incoming mails, all accounts with normal SMTP work fine for outgoing mails, but the single account that is configured with secured authentication cannot send mail. Sending works ok as soon as I stop the email scanner (provider).

The mail client simply times out and cannot connect.  If it can connect, I get the same message about refused login that has been shown in this thread already. Strage thing is, that the timeout occurs even if I switch off outgoing mail scanning, so apparently that does not prevent avast from interfering with the secured SMTP connection. Please let me know if you need any further input.

Kind regards

robert

Do you mean SSL connection?
If so, avast mail scanner doesn't support SSL (it has never had).

1. interception of the traffic by avast
2. actual scanning of the traffic

Unchecking the SMTP box in Internet Mail provider's settings disables 2 but not 1. This is what you're experiencing.

To prevent avast from doing 1 (which makes sense in your case as you're using SSL), please open the file <avast>\data\avast4.ini, and to the [MailScanner] section, add the following line:

StartSMTP=0

Besides using Outllook and The Bat! for SSL theres a solution in this thread
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=8775
to use SSL with other clients and also have the protection of avast.

Yeah exactly.

Unchecking the SMTP box in Internet Mail provider's settings disables 2 but not 1. This is what you're experiencing.
But then interception of traffic that is not analyzed should do no harm IMHO. Or is this impossible with SSL?

StartSMTP=0
Thanks! Works like a charm.

I stick with the solution that switches SMTP interception off.

Thanks again
