I don't know if ONLY XP - but definitely NOT Win9x (that's because it's caused by the avast module that's not used in 9x at all).

I have 4.5.518 running with ZA on an ME and a 98 with no problems.

Also running it on XP (still SP1)....still not happy with SP2.  Thus far....all is fine.

What I would try is to insert ALL Avast process in the Trusted Zone.  Then give permissions for Avast to access Trusted and Internet.
You can also try setting down the Program Control to Medium....not HIGH

Try that setting on ZA.

I am continuing to try to work with the email in OE.  The On Access continues to show it is working.  I can access the email in an off and on fashion.  Sometimes rebooting, or just restarting it.  But there seems to be no one thing I can do to get it to work in a normal and useful, reliable manner. I could not send anything and have gotten these two error messages.  Just as I was preparing this message in come an email although several minutes ago the errors appeared.  just when I think everything is ok, then it's not.  The attached also pops up (I erased part of my email) When I click ok the error messages come too.

Well, I guess I joined the group with email trouble.
After updating to the final 4.5.518, my OE stopped working.  

In addition, my other systems with Thunderbird and Pegasus stopped working as well.

Long story short....
The new 4.5 should have configured the email client by itself so that the 127.0.0.1 thing would not be needed but I found that the only way to restore my TB and Peg was to set them back to using the 127.0.0.1 and adding the #pop.isp.com and #smtp.isp.com formats to the username in Avast and the email client. (See Manual Configuration in the Help file).

From your screenshot, it seems that you could try adding the above structured formats for the POP and SMTP settings in OE using your actual ISP server addresses, and username as below.

Yourusername#pop3.omniglobal.net
Yourusername#smtp.omniglobal.net

In the picture you submitted, did you ever enter your correct user name?
What's depicted on the picture surely isn't your user name.
If you haven't tried correcting the sign-in screen, pleas give it a try.

Techie 101....what goes round comes round

I disabled ZA and only used Windows Firewall.  Email worked fine.
I enable ZA only and still the  OE is being selective and doing its thing sporatically.  I receive the same box as above every time.

I have switched the Firewalls back and forth several times with the same result.

I am not sure what you meant by changing the info in the box.  Before I change anything I need to be real sure of what I am doing.

Bob: Yes, everything is correct. I just deleted my username as I did not want it shown.  And if I click on the OK several times the email will connect, but as stated above it sometimes works and sometimes comes up with the errors.  Then I usually go off line and begin the process again.

VLK.........perhaps Avast has come up with the solution to the ZA  problem???

Hope a more difinitive answer will be forth coming.

I knew it couldn't be that simple but had to ask.
The funny thing is that I also use ZA but haven't had a bit bit of trouble at all.  I'm using ZA Pro don't know that makes any difference.

I don't really want to get into this, but I am using OE, ZA free, XP, SP2, and have had no problems with the mail scanner or anything else ---yet.

Maybe it depends upon what version of ZA you're using.  i.e. the most recent version or an older version.

Yes, I understand and have read several places where no one is having trouble with ZA.

If it was just a matter of it happening on a normal day I would think it was just me accidently fiddling with something.

But after the new avast came in yesterday, I restarted my computer as directed.  Then I went immediately to my OE email...and the rest is history.  I didn't have any trouble before the Update.

I kept trying for a bit to see if it was going to work, but I didn't change a thing(wouldn't know how anyway).  Went to the forum where I saw many questions and tried to find a thread before starting my own.

Now perhaps not anything related to avast.  As I said it works sometimes but not without that little box appearing and I have to keep clicking OK many times.  Then it may or may not  work. But if I do not have ZA enabled there seems to be no problem.
