Connie,

Thanks for the clarification but I just finished fixing the W98 machine.  Yes, W98 only works with the "old" settings of 127.0.0.1 and the # format in the POP and SMTP addresses.

As I said, XP works ok with the 4.5, but Thunderbird only works the old way.  I have to update TB to the new .9 and see what happens.

Right now, all my email is working on my 3 machines.
What a nightmare for 2 days!

Still don't know if any fix is in the works.

Oh well.  It makes life interesting.   ;D

Techie 101 has been working with me on my problem with OE.  We made no changes in my system etc.  He was just evaluating and checking some settings.

Then Avast 4.5.423 appeared.  After the restart, everything  worked fine.

(I hope)

Techie, for me TB .9 works at XP with the new system of avast 4.5 (I did not test the old 4.1).  8)

I had 24  hours of the email working perfectly.

I am now receiving the error message again, but if I am persistent and keep trying it eventually connects.

I spoke too soon.
