Hi Vlk and HTH,
Last night I tried removing the driver files but you may remamber I found only aswmon2. Removal of that made no difference.
I just tried to upgrade from 4.1.396 to 4.5 and install went ok and when I look at about avast in the menu it says 4.5.518 but on rebooting
the desktop comes up with no icons in right side of taskbar, and soon freezes when I try to do anything.
Both my computers were running perfectly on 4.1.501 but now can only run 4.1.396 and get warnings comp may be at risk.
Updating then takes me back to same problem.
     Thanks both of you         Mal

HTH,
Thanks for your suggestion about fresh install, but just tried that with same result. I don't think any other shields are in the way as I see in about avast that it is installed.
Also remember this happens on two computers,
         Thanks for your response     Mal

im thinking that maybe there`s something consistent with both pc`s thats upsetting the install and maybe it might be wise to go herehttp://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htmor even herewww.trendmicro.com/activescan just to rule out anything undermining the process

Hi All,
I have tried a few times to uninstall and reinstall. Always with same result.
At the moment I have 4.1.396 installed and the comp seems to run ok as it did with 4.1.501.
So why not with 4.5.
   Help please.
                      Mal

There could be some for of interaction with other programs, namely your firewall, when you update avast from the previous versions.

Leave your older version on the system (so you have AV protection whilst on-line) and download the 4.5 version from avast.com.

Uninstall avast, use the Avast Uninstall Utility, here as well to ensure that all remnants of avast are gone and reboot. Now install avast 4.5 that you downloaded, once up and running, paste the registration key you were originally sent into the relevant place.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

DavidR,
Thanks for the suggestion I tried that as you said but still the same.
I am back to 4.1.396 and this appears to run ok.

ok, you have messed around enough ;) Let's try to approach it in a different way.

- Download and install StartUp.cpl. (can be found HERE)
- uninstall Avast using the util from the website
- reboot
- disable everything from loading that isn't needed for the system to work properly
- install Avast 4.5
- reboot

If this solves it, you know where to look.
If it doesn't solve/change anything, have a look at the system log, event log and Avast's log file. It may tell you more about what is going on.

Eddy,
in avast log file there was in error file ODBC function CREATE TABLE Agent long names  Error 1792.
If you mean in computer management event viewer there were quite alot of entries in antivirus file named client event 90.
Trouble is when I install 4.5 I then have to power down and go into safe mode
so that I can system restore or uninstall to get back to be able to do anything.
      Mal.

Open Avast4.ini and change ODBC to XML.
Let's see if that helps.
