Status of Windows 8 Support or Compatibility
« on: October 12, 2011, 05:46:12 PM »
I'm running Win8b8102 and wanted to install some AV because I might be doing some hazardous stuff (I don't always run one, because I know how to avoid infections effectively without). As such I turned to my favorite AV that I recommend to everybody - Avast. Installing it, expect it to work fine due to the OS similarity to Win7 (when you disable metro it's mostly just a program and kernel update). It installs fine, and then the service will not start. I am willing to go as far as to strip the protection system that blocks Avast out of the OS by hand if need be, but I need details. What stops the service from starting?

More ideally, has any progress been made on a Win8-supporting version of Avast, or a way to get the current version working without such drastic measures as I proposed above?

Thanks.

PS - to Avast team if ya read this: keep being awesome, and keep having a free version. xD

Pk (avast! team) posted that they where effectively blocked from installing by MS.  Its not just Avast! that is blocked either.  Anyway, it looks like you just wont be able to install Avast! on Win8 Dev, you will have to wait till the Beta is released.

If there is a way to remove what is blocking Avast!, I have not seen any such method posted here.

Even if one was posted, it might have been removed, as whatever method you could use to accomplish this, it might well violate whatever TOS or what not you agreed to when you installed Win8.

Windows 8 Preview builds - compatibility, they are currently blocking installations, see, topic and this post in particular:
not yet, because DP 8102 doesn't allow avast component to load itself - they block us, today I'll speak with MS devs here at build conference how we can fix it; unfortunately, you will have to wait for the official win8 beta, because they have to remove blocking from their code
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Yeah I read that, but where does this "blocking" originate - if it's a service, a DLL hook, etc., it can be excised.

Your going to have to ask microsoft that question but i doubt they would be willing to give over that information yet.

It is embedded in the windows 8 dev preview code and I don't know where.

Not yest but I'm also waiting for the release. I'd like to be able to show off Windows 8 protected by avast! when I do my presentations.  :)
