Transparent email (SMTP/POP3/IMAP4) scanner
« on: November 14, 2004, 10:04:46 PM »
"The Internet Mail provider has been enhanced so that it is now able to filter email traffic automatically, without the need of reconfiguration of the mail client programs. This is realized by employing a low-level network filtering driver that is able to intercept all communication streams and divert them to the avast! mail scanner."

Question:  Won't this slow down the network (all traffic is passed to even another filter, in addition to firewall)?  Is there a way to use the old system (127.0.0.1) and disable the new filter (I guess this is a service or network component), or can e-mail scan only be done the new way?

1. Only connections to SMTP, POP3 and IMAP ports are diverted to Mail Scanner (25,110, 143 - if not specified otherwise in the avast4.ini).

2. Once the connection is redirected to Mail Scanner the network filter no longer iterferes with it by no means.

3. It is possible to disable this feature in avast4.ini file (section [MailScanner] option AutoRedirect=0, but you will definitely NOT gain any speed improvement.
