How do I limit the size of logs such as the Behavior Shield?
« on: November 15, 2011, 08:50:25 PM »
Greetings everyone,

I would like to ask how do I limit the size of logs, such as, the Behavior Shield log which does not have a report option that I can set to "overwrite", like the File System Shield does?

All that is happening is the file is simply getting larger every day.

Thank you for your time and any info!

Try Avast main GUI -> settings -> maintenance -> logs.

Thanks very much for the info, Ady4um!  :)

I reset the size down to 500 KB.  Will see how that works out.

I have mine set to 32KB, for a text file that is quite big enough. There are some logs that aren't obeying that so I don't know if there is some limit you can't go below. But my behaviorshield.txt file is only 86KB.

I'm not sure if restricting the Auto-Cleanup section, Delete scan logs older than (30 days) might also apply to these report files.

Hi DavidR!

It doesn't appear that the "delete scan logs older than xx days" or the temp logs delete setting work for the Behavior Shield log.  My current settings are to delete scan logs older than 7 days, and temporary logs older than 1 day.  The Behavior Shield log has entries all the way back to August 30th.

Thanks very much for the additional info!

No problem.

I think you can actually delete the behaviorshield.txt file if you first stop the behavior shield. Once you delete the file, restart the behavior shield and that will recreate the file (I have just done it and it works).

Sounds good.  I'll give that a try!

Thanks again!

Hopefully it would take some considerable time to build back up again.

Not sure about the Behavior Shield (I cannot check it because I have it removed) but in the recent past I have successfully deleted a couple of the other reports files without temporary disabling the respective shields.

I had also the "delete scan logs older than (...) days" option set to "1" but I have never seen it working as far as I know. Perhaps "1" was too low...

Do you think I don't test before posting, with the behavior shield enabled the file is in use and you get an error, 'file in use by another program' or at least I did ???

Relax please, I didn't mean to infer anything. Just wanted to underline that according to my own experience it's possible to delete some reports files (without disabling shields) but I also wanted to underline that I wasn't sure about the Behavior Shield because I had it removed - so I don't use it, have no experience with it.

Why did I write my message? Simply because the OP would like to limit the size of logs and I thought that maybe he would also like to delete some big-size reports first (not only Behaviour Shield's), without disabling the respective shields when possible.

My two cents, nothing more.
