You should have something like this:

[MailScanner]
DefaultPopServer=mail.securenet.net
DefaultSmtpServer=pop.securenet.net
ShowTrayIcon=1
UseDefaultSmtp=0
AutoSetProtection=0
PopListen=127.0.0.1:110
SmtpListen=127.0.0.1:25
ImapListen=127.0.0.1:143

Of course with your mail pop3 and smtp server names instead of those listed up there...

See also thread Avast and Pegasus Mail.

I gave OS information about my system there.

If I disable avant mailscanner everything works fine after reinitalizing it it hangs up again larger mail downloads. I experiment with the avast.ini in the data folder seems this is the key. There are some changes within which sometimes lead to peer error when changing to 127.0.01 I think a solution would be to have that ini and especially the settings under mailscanner before the update to 4.5 so can you publish a old setting table of this ini (perhaps of version 4.1 or 4.4?

Thnaks in advance

[MailScanner]
DefaultPopServer=127.0.0.1
DefaultSmtpServer=127.0.0.1
ShowTrayIcon=1
UseDefaultSmtp=0
AutoSetProtection=0
PopListen=127.0.0.1:1032
SmtpListen=127.0.0.1:1033
ImapListen=127.0.0.1:143

Let me explain why the POP & SMTP servers are listed as 127.0.0.1. My primary email account is with MSN which does not support using "normal" email clients. Therefore, 127.0.0.1 routes the traffic to an application called Hotmail Popper which actually contacts the MSN server to retrieve and send email. Before installing 4.5.518 and 4.5.523 the IP address had been set to 127.0.0.2.

Is this something you have changed manually? (I guess so)

BTW 127.0.0.2 has no meaning. 127.0.0.1 is the loopback address (the address of the machine itself - i.e. so-called "localhost") which can indeed lead to Hotmail Popper if it's running on the same machine.

Thanks

Yes, I had to configure everthing manually when I started using Hotmail Popper. I left avast set to 127.0.0.1 and configured Hotmail Popper to use 127.0.0.2.

OK guys, have you ever tried to change server names from 127.0.0.1 to their original names given to you by your ISP ? Try that and see what happens...

As I mentioned in the opening post, I had changed my settings to the correct names rather than the previous 127.0.0.1.

Whenever I turn the Mail scanner off, I can send and recieve mail. When I switch it on, no mail can be sent or recieved and the Ashmaisv Icon in the Tray stays on until I manually terminate the scanner or Use Task Manager to End the process. It also sets my processor to 100% usage while it does its endless loop thing of apparently trying to contact the same IP address constantly.

D'Oh!

On a hunch I checked my Firewall and saw it wasn't allowing Ashmaisv.exe to access the internet. Once added everything worked fine. I presume that the update means it uses a different service to the old one for contacting the net.

I never thought to check before, as it had no problems connecting to get updates, but obviously it might help others to ensure that Ashmaisv has net access through firewalls. I've already made a seperate post about the fix that worked for me to make it easier to find (rather than buried here at the end of this thread).

I still don't understand which is the firewall that you use... ZoneAlarm as well as Sygate would alarm you if something's changed... for sure, Sygate alarmed me. Every single time when avast! is updated with some new program update, Sygate alarms me and I have to give it access. That's normal. Some processes are changed, so Sygate recognizes them. It is how it should be. That means that your firewall is "watching" closely on what's happening in your system.

Cheers !

Sasha, I wonder if ZA is what's causing the problem I'm having now? But I did allow access when the update occured so shouldn't that be enough? and it's not giving me any alerts now, but I'm still having problems.

also, it is taking longer than usual when I post a message here...

CoJo, problem (actually slight delay) with posting messages here is something different. Most likely it's caused by some small problems with server. Sometimes I have huge problems posting in here... sometimes, everythng goes without problems.

Can you see what are those settings in ZoneAlarm ? I mean Application settings. I used ZA so long time ago, so I can't recall is there any option where you can manualy give access to some applications. If you have something like that, you should search through the list and try to find is your Ashmaisv.exe allowed to access the internet...

rlyn16, the transparent mail scanner does not scan traffic between two programs on your computer (Thunderbird and Hotmail Popper in this case) by default. Use this setting in avast4.ini section [MailScanner] to enable it:
IgnoreLocalhost=0
