A startup problem
« on: November 01, 2011, 12:58:26 PM »
Hi! I've been a long time user of Avast! antivirus and am happy with it on my Windows 7 x64 machine. However, today I experienced something weird. I started up my laptop and when it came into Windows the Avast icon had an X over it. And there was only about 35 processes running (instead of about 45 as usual when I boot up). I tried to FIX Avast and start the services again but it froze instead. I also saw an asterisk sign on my internet connection icon. I restarted my PC and boot into safe mode. All seemed OK. And then back into normal mode. The problem was still present. I waited a little and all went to normal. Later I run MBAM and Avast for malware checks even if I'm 99,99% sure it's not a malware thing. I'm guessing that Avast tried to update it's definitions but something got wrong with the internet connection and it froze itself and the computer. Is that possible? Can I somehow check what happened (an Avast log or something)? What should I do? Thank you!

Repair avast:
1. Control Panel - Add/Remove programs - avast!
2. Scroll down and click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.

Is that necessary? I mean, now it all works fine again. I'm more interested in why and what exactly happened. Also, if I repair Avast, will I keep all my custom settings that I set in Avast? Thank you.

1. If it's still running fine after a reboot, no.
2. Yes.

It's running fine after reboot too, I'll leave it be. Is there any log so that I could see what happened before? I hope that it will be alright now, if not I'll post here again. Thank you for help.

@Bellzemos
There appears to have been a problem with one of the updates which was corrected by the following
update.
If everything is working again, then don't worry about it.
I got lucky again and missed the update that caused the problems.  ;D
