Avast service has been stopped. Help please.
« on: November 01, 2011, 01:02:26 PM »
When I turned on my pc this morning, avast warned me that the service was stopped. No matter how many times I hit "start program" or "fix now" it refuses to run. My license is due to expire in a month, so I'm fairly sure that isn't the problem.

I have tried starting the service thru the task manager and the services menu as an administrator. The task manager says Access Denied if I try to shut down the process or start the service.

I'm running Windows 7 Pro. Never had this problem before and would appreciate any help! :)

Repair avast:
1. Control Panel - Add/Remove programs - avast!
2. Scroll down and click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.

Hi Homncruse,

If still its not working, try to reinstall avast!. Make sure that you use the avast! removal tool to remove the avast! from the computer. You can download the removal tool from  http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility. Try to download the latest version of avast! from the avast!website. Before installing avast!, remove all other security softwares if you do have them. Hope the issue will be fixed this time.

Have a wonderful day. Good Karma! :)

Hi. I had the same problem - repair didn´t work. I think the problem is in the virus definition 111031-1. I connect to the Internet and try to start avast! - not success. Then I tried to click the Upgrade button and after few minutes avast! successfully update the virus definiton to 111101-0 and all services switched ON. After restart all seems OK and now I have 111101-2. I hope it helps.

With a VPS update Avast! can update the AV engine as well. Maybe, but that is pure speculation, something went wrong and it was corrected with the next VPS update.

I had this problem on both of my systems this morning but the VPS update 111101-2 has fixed it.

Hi.

Hope I'm not OT. I was wondering if in cases like this, when there's a problem with a VPS update, Avast! servers are able to force a new update just to correct the previous one? I mean forcing a VPS update regardless of the user's update interval settings.

@Tetsuo,

Avast servers can have a new VPS available for update whenever Avast Software needs to. But, forcing the client (your system, your installed version of Avast) to do something that is not configured to do?

Think about this in a different situation. Many users would come here questioning the "security" offered by Avast, and MANY would stop immediately using Avast.

Whatever happens, I wouldn't want any organization doing something in my system that is against what I allowed or configured.

Anyway, just my opinion.

Thanks for your reply, ady4um.

I didn't mean to suggest anything - by the way, I'm sorry for my English - I was just wondering if in an "extreme situation" like that reported by the OP (or even worst a false positive issue concerning OS) they usually force updates to prevent or solve issues.

I think your opinion is widely shared.
