Blue Screen
« on: November 01, 2011, 05:02:14 PM »
Hi,

Once again I'm here to ask for your help, like the last time I been having these horrible blue screens showing one in a while, since the last time I asked for your help this behavior was almost gone but began to reappear this month.

Asking for help in another place, they told me it could be caused by the antivirus since that was my problem before, so that's why I came for help again.

Hope you can help me with this.

Some information would help, Your Operating System and SP version number, what you were doing and when the BSOD happened ?

Also any information taken from the BSOD screen ?

Windows 7 service pack 1

I have seen it happen while surfing the net, watching videos, even a little while after startup

I have the minidumps but I don't know how to read them or extract that much information from them

First zip the memory dump, and name the zip archive in a unique way, such as FNXHELLBLAZER-2011NOV01.zip.

It is also recommended to add to the zip archive a text file with a link to this topic an any additional relevant info.

Press <shift> and click on the link ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming and then drag and drop the file into that page.

You won't see the file inside it, since it is a write-only site (no read permissions).

Do you have a FTP client..??
If not, this one is a good choice: http://filezilla-project.org

Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer should be enough too.

Well, it's more a crook, but should work. ;)

Thanks, to answer your question I don't have another security software in the PC (bought 3 years of avast), one question, how do I upload files to the ftp?

- Upload any minidump or memory.dmp files, zipped to reduce size.  Give the zip file you are uploading a unique name (e.g. forumusername-mem-dump.zip, etc), so they can identify it. It might not be a bad idea to create a text file (readme.txt) with any relevant information, avast topic URL, user name, etc. etc. in the zip file. Not to mention posting the name of the file you uploaded in the topic acts as another searchable reference.

- Memory dump locations, Mini Dump files in, C:\Windows\Minidump\ - Full Kernel dump file, C:\windows\memory.dmp

Upload the zip file to the ftp server ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming:
- Using Internet Explorer, Connect to the link and drag the file into the Right pane and drop it, that starts the upload, you don't have read access to this folder.
Or
- Upload it using the Run command-line in Windows: Windows Key + R (to get the run box), copy and paste this explorer ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming and drag the file into the window, from another explorer window.

####
Excuse me if I'm teaching your granny to suck eggs:
- First you have to create your zip file with the unique name, containing the dump files and the readme.txt file, before you even consider connection to the ftp location explorer ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming. You do not have read permissions on the explorer ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming location, so you won't see it has been uploaded.

Now you make your first windows explorer connection to the ftp link explorer ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming, now open another explorer window where you locate your unique zip file containing the dump and readme.txt files; drag and drop that file into the other explorer window (right hand side), no need to click enter or any other action.

Ok, I already uploaded the files with filezilla like suggested, the names are FNXHELLBLAZER_MEMORY.zip for the memory dump and FNXHELLBLAZER_BSOD_DMP.zip for the minidump,
is there anything else I need to do?
